BioWare Says No to Dragon Age Remasters

BioWare Rules Out Dragon Age Remasters

Dragon Age Origins

BioWare has officially ruled out the possibility of remastering the original Dragon Age games. The studio cited several reasons for this decision. First, the Eclipse engine, which was used to develop the first two games, is ageing. Second, key developers with expertise in this engine have departed. These factors contributed to the decision.

“I think I’m one of about maybe 20 people left at BioWare who’s actually used Eclipse,” explained Creative Director John Epler in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. “It’s something that’s not going to be as easy Mass Effect, but we do love the original games. Never say never, I guess that’s what it comes down to.”

In contrast to the Dragon Age series, the original Mass Effect trilogy was built on the widely-used Unreal Engine. This made it significantly easier for BioWare to revisit and remaster those titles, as the engine’s technology is still relevant and widely supported.

While a complete remake of the original Dragon Age games using the modern Frostbite Engine is not entirely off the table, it would require a substantial investment of time and resources. BioWare’s current focus remains on developing new titles, including the recently released Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

This news is disappointing for many fans. They have been eagerly waiting for the chance to revisit these classic RPGs with updated visuals and gameplay mechanics. However, it’s important to understand the technical challenges involved in such a project. The studio has decided to prioritize future endeavours instead.
