  1. iPhone Tops the Charts Yet Again

2020 was not a good year in terms of smartphone sales so as the world tries to recover from the pandemic, the smartphone industry has set a first quarter record for Q1 2021, with Apple dominating the charts.

Referring to a report by Counterpoint, the iPhone 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max in terms of revenue shares in Q1 2021 were the top smartphones. Apple has captured 38% of the revenue and dominated the top 10 list with 5 smartphones on it. This dominance does make sense as iPhones have been the most popular smartphones for some time now however their premium prices saw them drop off a few years ago. With the iPhone 12 series, there were three models for around $700 (RM2800) which saw them appeal to a wider and bigger market.

The top Android smartphone of 2021 was, to no ones surprise, a Samsung flagship. The Galaxy S21 Ultra was 5th on the top 10 list and had about 3% of the revenue while the regular S21 and S21 Plus had a combined 3% between them. The Huawei Mate 40 Pro also featured on the charts at 8th place which was a surprise given the fact that Huawei has lost a lot of popularity as they do not have access to Google Play Services anymore.

In terms of volume, Apple also dominated and the iPhone 12 had a 5% stake of this chart in Q1 2021. This was followed by the iPhone 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max and surprisingly the iPhone 11 as well. The best selling Android phone in Q1 2021 was surprisingly a Redmi device. It was not one of Redmi’s latest flagships but it was their midrange device, the Redmi 9A and Redmi 9 that claimed  3% of the volume share which placed them at 5th and 6th place. As per Counterpoint, this was the case as these devices were very popular in China and India. This and the fact that the Redmi Note 9 also made the charts goes to show how dominant Redmi has been in the sub $150 (RM600) price point.

These charts however do not take into account all the offline sales hence it does not tell the whole story but it does go to show Apple’s dominance when compared to the Android market.
