Apple sent out their invites for their annual WWDC which will happen from June 7-11 2021 and for the second year running, the event will be virtual. Here is everything you need to know about what might happen at WWDC 2021 and Adam Lobo TV also will have you covered with a rundown of everything that happened at the event right after it wraps up.
Easter Eggs
The announcement came with an animation of a Memoji character opening and looking at a MacBook which seems to be a nod to the memes of Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi and the way he showed off the M1 MacBooks. The tagline for the event is “Glow and Behold”. Many have speculated that the MacBook in the invitation is a nod to the fact that there might be new hardware at WWDC 2021.
iOS 15 and iPadOS
The next iPhone will only be released in the fall but the new version of the operating system, probably called iOS 15, is set to be released at WWDC 2021.
iOS 14 brought along with it a lot of changes with the main highlight being widgets, better Home Screen customisation, a new interface for Siri and picture-in-picture. Many rumours point to iOS 15 being a minor update in comparison but that does not mean it will not bring changes to the OS.
Bloomberg reports that iOS 15 is set to bring changes to notifications. According to the report, there will be new notification filters and a new menu available on the Lock Screen and the control centre. Users will be able to have more control over how notifications are displayed based on what they are doing says the report.
iOS 15 and iPadOS are also set to bring a major overhaul to the iPads Home Screen. This should include the ability to add widgets to the home screen and not just the widget panel. There is not much else said on other changes but Bloomberg claims this will be the most significant change to the iPads Home Screen.
Apple is always big on privacy so iOS 15 and iPadOS are also set to bring quick access to privacy data. A new menu will reportedly let users see what information apps are collecting about them. Presumably this would tap the same data used by Apple for new “privacy labels” introduced to the App Store last December.
Next would be the updated iOS Lock Screen. An updated Lock Screen has long been rumoured and while it has never materialised, Bloomberg reports that it will be updated in iOS 15.
The final big rumour is an upgrade to iMessage. Apple aims to make iMessage a proper competitor to WhatsApp and have the goal of making it act as more of a social network than what it is now, however Bloomberg does state that this is still in early development and might be announced later this year.
macOS 12
There is not much known right now about Apples new version of macOS, macOS 12. macOS Big Sur was a major overhaul of the operating system so macOS 12 is expected to be more of a minor update focusing on under the hood changes.
watchOS 8
Similarly to macOS, there has not been much rumours about the new watchOS version. There are however reports of Apple bringing more health features to the Apple Watch such as a mental health feature and an blood sugar level monitor but all these seem more likely with a new Apple Watch rather than with a software update.
Products
Apple tends to surprise people at their developer conference with some new products and it seems like we might be getting something at WWDC 2021. Famous leaker Jon Prosser claimed that he can confirm a new MacBook Pro will be coming at WWDC but did not say anything else. The next MacBook Pro is rumoured to bring a new design and come in two sizes. It is also set to bring back the HDMI port and MagSafe charging. The MacBook Pro is also reported to be powered by the new Apple silicon chip, the “M1X” according to Bloomberg. This chip is rumoured to feature a 10 core design with eight high performance cores and two high efficiency cores. Apple might offer two variants of the chips, a chip with 16 GPU cores and one with 32 GPU cores.
If a MacBook Pro is actually coming to WWDC 2021, it looks set to be the most powerful MacBook Pro yet.
You can tune in to WWDC 2021 through the Apple website on June 8th at 1 AM MYT. It will also be streamed on Apples official YouTube Channel. Adam Lobo TV will have a rundown of everything that happened right after the even wraps up in case you missed it.
