Microsoft is hosting their Build 2021, a developer focused conference, this week which has introduced improvements to Microsoft Edge, updates to Microsoft Teams and a lot more but the highlight of the conference so far has been Microsoft teasing the future of Windows. While Microsoft will not be showcasing a new Windows at Build 2021 as they are saving that for a separate event, CEO Satya Nadella still provided a little insight on what to expect.
During the Keynote, he revealed that over the last few month he has been testing the next generation of Windows and said;
“Soon we will share one of the most significant updates to Windows of the past decade to unlock greater economic opportunity for developers and creators. I’ve been self-hosting it over the past several months, and I’m incredibly excited about the next generation of Windows. Our promise to you is this: we will create more opportunity for every Windows developer today and welcome every creator who is looking for the most innovative, new, open platform to build and distribute and monetize applications. We look forward to sharing more very soon.”
Over the last few months, Microsoft have been testing some significant changes to the Windows UI and have also been working on a better App Store for Windows, so this could be him sort of promising to create a better Windows economy for developers and users.
The new update to the Windows store is rumoured to be pretty significant as it might allow developers to submit any application to the store which includes the likes of browsers and possible third-party commerce platforms in apps.
Before Build 2021, Microsoft confirmed that Windows 10X, an operating system built for dual screen devices will no longer ship as they aim to bring parts of Windows 10X to Windows 10 and make it a more simplified main version of Windows. The codename according to some reports of this new generation of Windows is “Sun Valley” and there has already been some changes with new system icons.
Stay Nadella did state that the new generation of Windows will be announced very soon so stay tuned for an announcement or event in the near future.
