AirPods Get Major Upgrade: Studio Audio Recording and Remote Camera Control Unveiled
Apple showcased new features for its latest AirPods models, transforming them into even more versatile tools for communication and content creation. Future firmware updates for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), and AirPods Pro 2 will introduce “studio-quality audio recording” and a “camera remote” function, empowering users to capture high-fidelity audio and control their device’s camera remotely.
Elevating Audio for Creators and Calls
With these groundbreaking additions, Apple aims to enhance how AirPods users communicate. Moreover, they offer innovative ways to produce content. Specifically, the studio-quality audio recording feature promises to revolutionise on-the-go recording for interviewers, podcasters, singers, and other creators. It delivers superior sound quality even in challenging or noisy environments, thanks to the integration of Voice Isolation.
Powered by the H2 chip, beamforming microphones, and computational audio, users can also expect more natural vocal texture and clarity during calls across iPhone, FaceTime, and CallKit-enabled apps. This enhanced audio recording and call quality will be compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Mac, extending to the Camera app, Voice Memos, dictation in Messages, video conferencing platforms like Webex, and various compatible third-party camera applications.
Seamless Remote Camera Control
Beyond audio, the new camera remote functionality simplifies content capture from a distance. Users of the Camera app or compatible third-party camera apps on iPhone or iPad will be able to initiate or stop video recordings and snap photos with a simple press-and-hold of the AirPods stem. This feature is particularly beneficial for those recording themselves singing or dancing, allowing for seamless synchronisation with a soundtrack while simultaneously capturing video.
Availability and Future Rollout
These exciting new features are currently available for testing through the Apple Developer Program. Additionally, they will be accessible via a public beta programme starting next month. Looking ahead, the official rollout for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Pro 2 is scheduled for this fall as a complimentary firmware update, coinciding with the release of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. However, Apple notes that features are subject to change and may vary in availability based on language, region, and local regulations.
