At WWDC, Apple announced that the next version of macOS will be macOS Monterey and the update is set to bring along a bunch of new features but according to the fine print on Apple’s macOS Monterey website, some of these new features will not be coming to Intel Macs based on a report from MacRumours.
M1 based Macs were first released back in November and since then, they have proved to be powerful machines but not many people have managed to get their hands on one yet because they have not been around for that long. Below are the features in macOS Monterey that will be available exclusively on M1 Macs.
- FaceTime Portrait Mode
- Live Text (copy text from an image)
- Apple Maps’ globe view
- More detailed Apple Maps
- Neural text-to-speech voices in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish
- Offline on-device dictation
- On-device dictation without a time limit
These M1 exclusive features, while minor features now, do indicate that Apple might make features on future versions of macOS only work on computers with Apple based silicons. When they released the M1 Macs, Apple did say that they would “continue to support and release new versions of macOS for Intel-based Macs for years to come”, but this seems to mean that Intel-based Mac users might have to live with missing out on certain features.
