Last month, Xiaomi unveiled their 200W wired charging which is a huge step forward for charging technology but this is set to come at a long term cost. A Q&A on the company’s Weibo account today revealed how quick the 200W charging speed will degrade your phones battery.
The Q&A session revealed that 800 charging and discharging cycles at 200W will result in your phones battery degrading to above 80% of its original capacity. 800 cycles is equivalent to just over two years of use. It means that a phone with a 4,000 mAh battery will have a 3,200 mAh cell after two years of charging with this method.
This is similar to Oppo’s 125W charging method which was announced last year. The company at that time said that 800 cycles with 125W will drop to battery capacity to 80%. The company also said that the 65w charging solution dropped the battery capacity to 91%.
Xiaomi claims that the Chinese regulatory standard for battery degradation is that 60% of capacity should be left after 400 cycles but in a world where people are holding on to their smartphones for a lot longer, this is extremely low. In a world where smartphones have 5G and high refresh rate screens, we definitely need our phone battery to last a lot longer.
