According to a South Korean tipster, Samsung might be looking to use more plastic and less glass in the construction of the Galaxy S22 series. The tipster suggests that Samsung are planning on using a “brand new processing technology” to create the back cover of the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus.
The rumour says that both devices will be made of plastic, not glass and only the S22 Ultra would make the cut for a glass back. Currently, the S21 Plus and S21 Ultra both sport glass backs while the S21 has a plastic back. This rumour, along with the rumour that suggests a reduction in screen size for the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus probably means that Samsung are looking to make the Ultra model stand out even more next year. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is also said to be the only phone to carry an LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) display.
The Galaxy S21 series saw a price reduction this year compared to the S20 line and Samsung might want to keep that going with their new flagship lineup. Moving to a plastic back would help Samsung keep the cost of the device down, resulting in a cheaper flagship device. This could also be a way for Samsung to offset the possible higher cost of the new Snapdragon processor or the Exynos chip with AMD GPU that these new devices may offer.
Having a plastic back is not terrible news. Plastic is more durable than glass and are less prone to shattering. They also do not slip as much and are easier to grip compared to glass backed devices. If Samsung is creating the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus with a new proprietary technique as rumored, you can expect the phones to also look as premium as their glassy elder sibling.
All these are still rumours so it should be taken with a pinch of salt. There is a lot that could change between now and when these devices actually launch so stay tuned to Adam Lobo TV for more updates.
