Hey, what’s up? Adam Lobo here and I’m back with a brand new phone from realme – the realme 9i.
So could this be a real contender in the sub-RM1,000 smartphone space?
Well, stick around, because not only I will be unboxing and giving you my first impressions of the phone BUT if this video hits 10k views, I will be giving the phone away to you as well, so do check out my YouTube video below!
.
Unboxing
So the realme 9i comes with the usual yellow color box, with “9i” on top and “realme” down below. Then looking at the back, there are the specs of the phone over there.
Opening the box, there is a smaller yellow box which contains the manuals, the SIM ejector tool and the clear phone case.
Underneath, there is USB-A to USB-C cable and a 33-watt dart charging brick.
.
Build and design
Right off the bat, the realme 9i looks pretty unique, coming with a design concept that realme describes as “capture the light” and calls it Stereo Prism Design.
It’s really fancy in terms of name and I must admit, but what I can say is that if you’re looking for something different, then you’ve come to the right place.
Now, the design presents a dynamic effect of three-dimensional light and shadow delivering you a different look depending on the lighting of your environment.
The textures you see consist of more than 3,000 prism-like line combinations where the angle and depth of each line are different. Then there are eight layers of optical coating, delivering a sense of transparency and depth.
So there are two color options: Prism Blue and what you see here is the Prism Black version.
Overall, it looks and feels well built and as cliche as it sounds, it does feel good in the hand where the phone is just 8.5mm thin and weighs 190 grams.
As for the ports and buttons, looking below, other than the USB-C port, there’s one of the stereo speaker, where the other speaker is at the earpiece area, and there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, long time no see!
On the right side of the phone, you’ll find the side-mounted fingerprint sensor which doubles up as a power button of course and yes it does unlock very quickly.
Then on the left, you’ll find the volume rocker and the SIM card slot which also has micro SD card slot expansion.
.
Display
Over on the front, you’ll find a 6.6-inch Full HD+ LCD display topping 480 nits of brightness and 401 PPI.
First impressions show that the screen did indeed look very visible in bright daylight so that was nice, and what’s extra sweet is that it has an adaptive refresh rate of 90Hz and a touch sampling rate of 180Hz.
So if you love gaming, you are going to love the high refresh rate, which is impressive at this price point. And since the refresh rate is adaptive, it can help save power in more static or less demanding display use cases.
.
Cameras
On the back, you’ll find a triple camera setup arranged in a typical rectangular camera array, with a good mixture of lenses to cover typical shooting situations.
First up, there’s a 50-megapixel main camera with an aperture of F1.8
Then there is also a 2-megapixel black and white portrait lens with an F2.4 aperture.
Wrapping up the rear camera setup is a 2-megapixel macro lens with an F2.4 aperture and this macro lens can give you a minimum focus distance as close as 4cm to a subject for macro shots.
So yes, there is NO Ultrawide camera on the phone. Now, call me crazy, but don’t you think it’s about time that EVERY smartphone camera has an ultrawide lens?
But let’s also not forget the all-important selfie camera on the front, which is a commendable 16-megapixel lens with an F2.1 aperture.
And yes I’m looking forward to giving this camera more thorough testing!
.
Hardware Specs
Moving on, let’s have a quick look at the hardware specs. What’s interesting about the realme 9i is that it comes with the very first Snapdragon 680 chipset with 6nm process.
Now, this impressive budget chipset is not only power-efficient but it packs overall better performance over the last generation Snapdragon 662 processor.
How much better? Well, realme says it’s 25% better in CPU performance, 10% better in GPU performance and also offers a 25% hike in AI performance, which is very important during Beauty and Night Modes as well as fast photo taking.
If you love numbers, you’ll be happy to know that the new 6nm chip has 211% higher transistor density compared to the 12 nm Snapdragon 662.
What’s also crucial is its power efficiency; it consumes 62% less power. Ultimately, this means it runs on a lower temperature and gives a more consistent performance, especially when it comes to gaming.
In terms of memory, the realme 9i comes built-in with 6GB of RAM but supports Dynamic RAM Expansion Technology (DRE), something we’ve been seeing in the market lately. Where DRE enables the phone to expand memory to up to additional 3 gigabytes of RAM.
In terms of storage, the realme 9i offers 128GB of storage and supports expandable storage of up to 1 terabyte via microSD.
Battery-wise, the realme 9i is bound to impress. On paper at least, it packs a 5,000 mAh battery that is claimed to give you 48.4 hours of phone calls, 995 hours of standby time, 20.7 hours of WhatsApp or 116.3 hours of music listening. But of course, let’s see if this is really true when I use the phone daily.
And if you do find yourself running low on juice, which is probably going to be rare, the 33W Dart Charge technology will take you from 0 to 100 percent in just 70 minutes. It’s the first 33W dart charging solution in the segment.
If you love to watch movies, play games or listen to music, you’ll be delighted to know that the realme 9i comes with a pair of stereo speakers which impressively supports Hi-Res certification.
Software
Lastly, in terms of software, the realme 9i runs realme UI 2.0 based on Android 11.
.
