The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with FOUR lenses in total, and mind you all of these four cameras are all usable lenses, so if there is someone who you know flashes out his brand new or old “VEVO X 7500 XT Pro Max” and says that “but my phone has 4 lenses too!” Well, ask them are each even usable? Because usually, it’s always things like one lens for a dedicated macro lens, another lens is a black and white lens, depth lens, contact lens and the list goes on…
And very few flagship phones have dedicated lenses with a variety of focal lengths, because to keep it in simple terms, and I promise that this is only the time I go all technical for you to properly understand what I mean.
When you are using this phone, you are having 24mm lens for the main, a 70mm telephoto lens, which can zoom up to a little more than 3 times from the main lens because 24 x 3 is 72mm, then there is a 13mm ultrawide lens and a crazy 230mm telephoto zoom lens, that can go close to 10 times zoom!
So what does all of this mean? It means that you can stand at one position, take out your phone and take so many different types of versatile pictures when you’re standing in that exact position.
Also, there were lots of people who were also complaining about how Samsung was using the exact sensor as last year’s S21 Ultra and that claim is totally UNTRUE because if you compare side by side in terms of the exact hardware specs, the focal length is tighter and different. And even though the megapixel count and the aperture value is the same, you are re looking at a different software experience you are certain to have a very great camera performance on the phone.
.
Photo Comparison
While this is not a comparison video, but here are some quick comparisons of photos taken with the S21 Ultra and even the Note 20 Ultra as well.
On the ultrawide lenses, you will find each to be very similar, just a bit more vibrant on the S22 Ultra and just a tad bit sharper as well.
When switching to the main lens, I see that the S22 Ultra has a bit better contrast on the roof area of the buildings, and also at the greenery tree area.
And while there’s not much of a difference for the 3x zoom, you’ll start seeing better details on the colors on the 30x zoom on the S22 Ultra, where things start to really fall off on the Note 20 Ultra.
And the image quality as you can see in this image, looks better for the S22 Ultra 5G when it comes to the 100x zoom.
So overall, you be the judge over here on what exactly that you have seen.Â
Also, I saw that there were complaints about how the auto-focus does not work properly on the S22 Ultra 5G, but as clearly seen (check out my YouTube video for the footage), there weren’t any issues at all, even when I was recording at 4K resolution.
Macro Lens
Then speaking of Macro lenses and all, while there isn’t a dedicated Macro lens on the phone, but there is a mode called Focus Enhancer, which you can toggle it on or off in the app, which is essentially a Macro mode, where if you get very close to a subject it will change the main 108-megapixel lens into a macro mode since the sensor is that huge.
High Megapixel Sensor
And speaking of this high megapixel sensor, the reason why the main images look really nice and sharp is because of the pixel binning that combines all the pixels to a smaller 12-megapixel photo, which is like how I shoot in 6k and downscale my videos to 4k to give that extra sharpness in the videos that you see in this channel.
Photos for the 10x and even the 30x were definitely passable for social media but of course there is the novelty 100x zoom if you really need, it’s something that I wouldn’t personally use, but it’s nice that it’s there.
.
Portrait Mode
Samsung has also mentioned that the Portrait Mode for subjects has really improved and YES it did, and they have also mentioned how Portrait Mode for pets has also improved and hell yes it did, as the little details like the edges of Luna’s fur was properly separated from the background as well, which no other smartphone has come close to this.
I even intentionally messed up my already messy hair to see how well the front camera’s portrait mode did and yes the edge detection was really great.
And among all the lenses, if I really had to pick a “favorite” I have to say that I really loved the 3x telephoto lens the most, as the images were tighter and overall had better depth as it had the best focal length for taking portraits as well.
While Samsung has mentioned that there are better integration with the social media apps’ camera with the phone, I am still the kind of person who rather shoot on the native camera app and then upload it on Instagram but it is nice that Samsung has made this a great integration too.
.
Nightography
So one of the main things that Samsung highlighted about the phone thoroughly during the keynote presentation was the Night Shots or the Nightography because yea, most smartphones with good light will look really good, but usually it is not the case when it comes to low-light or night time photos.
So yes, I did take lots of photos at night, using all of the lenses, and the portrait mode at night for the rear and the front was really great as well. I even took some moving night images as well and it captured the photos with no motion blur.
So yes, Samsung weren’t kidding when they said that they have improved on their low light photography or the Nightography, which I really think that it has performed exceptionally well.
.
Video Recording
[Check out my YouTube video for all the sample video footages]
Switching over to video, the 8k video is still really high in quality, as usual, image stabilization for all of the lenses in 4k was still flawless and had an extra stabilization with the Super Steady mode but of course, it will go down to 1080p so I would stick to the 4k footage as it was extremely stable too.
Director’s View
One thing that I really wanted to try out was the Director’s View because while there are other smartphones that had this feature of having both the rear and the front cameras recording at the same time, what’s really good on the S22 Ultra was the overall image stabilization compared to others I have tested, and the ability to change the rear lenses DURING recording was really sweet and seamless as well.
Portrait Video
The portrait video was also really improved a lot for human subjects, with a super DSLR-like style of video and yes it works extremely well on pets as I tested it on Luna as well.
Auto-Framing Mode and Slow-Motion
The Auto-Framing Mode did indeed come in handy for situations where there were more than one person in the frame where it did adjust the framing accordingly in the camera app.
Both the Super Slow-mo and the Slow-motion still work very well, a feature which has not been highlighted but yes, it’s still there.
.
Night Video Recording
And going again towards night video this time, it was really great as well, and image stabilization over here was really great too especially on the subject, which this case was me, if you really pixel peep, there might be a little jitter on some further subjects. But as of now, no other smartphone comes close to how good the night video stabilization and the overall dynamic range this S22 Ultra has.
And I even tested the Auto FPS mode at night as well to see how well that performed when taking videos in low light for moving objects and again I was floored by the results!
.
Other Camera Features
There are so many other features like the Bixby Vision, the AR Zone, the Pro Video or even the Pro Mode, which I’m going to go through hopefully really soon in my another video, so let me know what you guys think of all the camera performance on the S22 Ultra 5G.
That’s all for my camera review of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G – So, what do you think?
