Amazon Web Services (AWS) is solidifying its presence in Malaysia with the construction of its first data centre in the country. This development comes after the company’s earlier announcement regarding its intention to expand its AWS Region in Malaysia.
Development of the First Amazon Data Centre in Malaysia is Underway

A project signboard discovered on the Lowyat.NET forum by user eds2 reveals the planned location of a data centre. The data centre is set to be located on Persiaran APEC in Cyberjaya. The multi-phased project will include the core data centre facility. It will also feature office spaces and supporting buildings. Essential infrastructure will be part of the project as well.
The Sepang Municipal Council is overseeing the project. Asima Architects Sdn Bhd, Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd, Landarc Associates Sdn Bhd, and Arup Jururunding Sdn Bhd are participating in it. Specific start and completion dates for construction have not been announced yet. However, this development represents a significant step forward for AWS in Malaysia.
A separate report in the New Straits Times highlights that Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd secured a contract worth RM747.8 million in March. Specifically, this contract is for building a data centre for a US multinational technology corporation in Selangor. The project is set to begin on May 15, 2024, and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2027. However, whether this project is directly linked to Amazon’s data centre in Cyberjaya remains unclear.
The establishment of this new data centre underscores Amazon’s commitment to expanding its cloud computing offerings in Malaysia. This will provide local businesses and organizations with more options for running applications. It will also offer them better choices for storing data locally. This change could lead to improved performance. Additionally, it may enhance data security. Further updates regarding construction timelines and the official launch of Amazon’s first data centre in Malaysia are anticipated in the near future.
