Chery launched its latest electric vehicle, the OMODA E5, yesterday. The OMODA E5 is the first fully electric Chinese car to be assembled in Malaysia which was marked as a significant milestone by the brand. It is based on the well-received OMODA 5, and its attractive price tag of RM146,800 is sure to make it an appealing option for potential electric car buyers out there.
The OMODA E5 is powered by a 3-in-1 flat-wire motor that can generate an impressive 201hp and 340Nm of torque. The motor ensures low power consumption of only 15.5kWh/100km. The battery used is BYD’s lithium iron phosphate blade battery that has a capacity of 61kWh. The battery can be charged rather quickly, with a claimed charging time of 28 minutes to charge from 30% to 80% capacity. With a total range of 430km based on the WLTP cycle, the OMODA E5 should be more than adequate for short to medium journeys.
As for charging, the AC charging rate is 9.9kW, and the DC charging rate is 80kW. Overall, the OMODA E5 seems to be a commendable addition to the electric vehicle market here in Malaysia.

The Good Stuff
In case you didn’t know, Chery did exit the Malaysian car market in 2015 after their stay of around 10 years. But they came back mid last year with 3 brand new cars but their last departure did leave a bitter taste in some peoples mouths. Chery does know this and is quick to combat the public’s negative perception of the brand.
This round for the OMODA E5, Chery is giving 7 years or 150,000km vehicle warranty, 8 years or 160,000km battery warranty and 8- years or 160,000km drive unit warranty which covers the Power Motor, Power Motor Control Unit, Power Battery Management System and the Vehicle’s Control Unit. If the state of health falls under 70% during the warranty, Chery will do a one-to-one exchange with no questions asked. Now that is commitment to give peace of mind of potential buyers out there.
For the first 2000 bookings, more freebies will be on your way which includes:
- Wall box charger
- V2L (vehicle-to-load) charger
- Charging credits worth RM1000 at EVC roaming partners
Maybank will also be giving an all-exclusive 2.08% low-interest rate for customers who purchase the OMODA E5 during the promotional period. You can head down here for more information.
