Build Quality

Now, let’s look at the build quality.

Looking at the charging case, it was nice and compact where it is made out of a plastic clamshell build.

It was pretty light at only 37.4 grams with the earbuds inside. And the overall finish on top kind of reminded me of their X3, with the shiny metallic kind of look, and that gold embossed font was pretty sweet, which I liked.

Then the charging case is charged through a USB-C port at the back to charge the charging case and the earbuds, then there is a charging indicator below that.

One thing that I’ve noticed about the charging case is that although it had a very nice matte black colour finish, the finish was a bit too smooth, there were times when I felt it was a little difficult to open it and there were moments when it slipped off from my hands too, so keep that in mind.

I have to say that I loved how the hinge opens up nicely and stays in place and you could do a cool closing gesture like a Zippo… now this is NOT a feature just like how everyone thought that the upside gesture of the cover being close by itself was a “feature” where apparently some people referred to my video of the Edifier X3 asking Edifier why theirs don’t do it.

Then on the earbuds themselves, Edifier decided to go with the similar form factor of the NB series of the half stalk kind of design instead of the rounded ones where the top of earbuds had a similar finish to the charging case as well, with a light indicator right below the Edifier logo where this outer part has a glossy finish.

On the other side, you will find a matte finish, thank God for that as it won’t be slippery as it has a more ergonomic design that will fit better in your ears, which also fitted in perfect for me, with quite comfortable ear tips, which of course can be removed and changed according to your fitting. For me, I used the smaller ear tips instead of the standard medium ones which come inside of the box to make sure that the ear tips and earbuds fit in nice and snuggly.

And what’s sweet is the fact that it is IP55 dust and water resistant which is great to know as it will be perfect to wear even if you are working out.

Also worth mentioning that compared to the NB 2 this time around I didn’t find the end of the earbuds stem to touch the top part of my cheekbones, so that was nice but again of course this depends on the shape of your face.

Pairing

So the initial pairing process is super simple and it has Bluetooth 5.0 and it is compatible with both Android and iOS devices, and there is no app control so it is a straightforward Bluetooth earbuds connection.

It will immediately go into pairing mode where as soon as you take out the earbuds from the charging case, then just turn on your Bluetooth on your phone and look for the earbuds in your Bluetooth settings and you’re done. And once you have paired the earbuds, in the future, it pairs to your phone immediately.

Now just in case you want to pair the earbuds to maybe another phone, your PC or laptop, just press and hold the multifunction touch control button in the middle when both earbuds are in the charging case again to initiate the pairing process again.

And since it comes with a lower price point, it obviously doesn’t allow seamless Multi Pairing, so every time you switch devices, you will need to first unpair with the other device when switching devices.

Playback Controls

As for the playback controls, it is all done by a tap control or touch control, where this tap control works for music and call mode on both sides of the earbuds.

  • Touching it once plays, pauses playback and answers or ends a call
  • Touching it twice goes to the next track
  • Touching it three times goes to the previous track
  • And touching and holding it for about 2 seconds calls out your voice assistant

You can even call out Amazon Echo as well if you have it installed on your phone, which was great to know.

And yes you can use just one earbud if you like, as it won’t stop the playback even if you take it out as it has no proximity sensors.

However, there are no volume controls so you will need to adjust on your phone manually instead.

And finally it will immediately stop playback once you have taken out the earbuds and put it back and closed the charging case.

Sound Quality

Let’s now talk about the overall sound quality.

First of all, the earbuds do not have Active Noise Cancellation but the overall passive noise cancellation was pretty decent to block out most of the outside noise and it was quite apparent when you are listening to music as well.

For music listening, it supports AptX, AAC and SBC codecs and as usual, the overall listening experience is great as expected, especially with such an affordable price factor.

Where the earbuds really shine is the overall high mids, the low end was decent at best again, I didn’t mind it but some bass lovers might be wary of this.

I had a mood to listen to some System Of A Down’s Toxicity album and everything from the guitars and even the hits of the snare sounded great which complimented well with Serj Tankian’s vocals

Then I switched into something more commercial sounding like “Peaches” and the vocals were great and here is where I could hear some better low end in the musi

Then I switched to something random, which is Daft Punk’s “Motherboard” from their Random Access Memories album, where the sound separate was pretty nice and prominent.

And for you bass lovers out there I tested out Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” and everything sounds nice and well balanced, as predicted the bass was there and was stronger on the mid lows as opposed to being more prominent on the really low end.

And I have to say my overall listening duration on the earbuds both for music, watching videos and the occasional gaming didn’t make me have any ear fatigue, so that for me is surely a huge plus.

And in terms of latency, no issues when it comes to watching videos and no apparent delay on gaming when playing COD Mobile as well, again I must stress that these kinds of earbuds are not usually for competitive gaming, where a casual gaming would be totally fine.

Microphone Quality

So I have tested out the microphone quality, what’s great is there are two microphones with the CVC 8.0 noise reduction technology which filters out background ambient sound.

Firstly from a listening perspective, it sounded nice and clear.

Then from the other listeners’ perspective it was clear but there were times when the other person listening could hear themselves a bit, not very much distracting but yeah, sometimes it’s there.

Battery

As for the battery, I got an average of 6 hours and 5 minutes of battery on the earbuds itself with 100 percent volume, which was actually more than what Edifier mentions which is cool.

And about 15 hours on the charging case, similar to what Edifier has advertised.

In terms of charging, the earbuds charged just little over 1 and half hours and close to 2 hours to charge the case fully.

So yes, battery life is really great especially with this kind of price factor.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Edifier has yet again returned with one of the best that they could offer within this price factor.

While this is not a super crazy improvement from the previous generation when it comes to the sound quality, but there is surely better bass, and the things which really stood out the most is the fact that it’s really comfortable in the ears even for really long usage, especially coupled with a quite long battery life and the nice and compact form factor is surely a huge plus as well.

And finally going into the price of the earbuds, since I have mentioned many times about the price, these Edifier X5 is only going with a super affordable price of ONLY RM139!
