This is the world’s first ultra-thin trifold phone, the HUAWEI Mate XT Ultimate Design—a phone that could not only fold once but twice while being thinner than a bar phone, something that was deemed impossible is now possible.
So, let’s talk about how it works, why it even exists, and if this is the future or just another flex?
Unboxing
What do you get inside of the box of the world’s first trifold phone? Firstly, the box is larger than a typical smartphone, of course, almost looking like you’re unboxing a tablet.
The first thing you’ll see is the phone itself, wrapped and unfolded.
Underneath, there are two separate boxes on the left and right. Towards the left, there’s a 66W HUAWEI SuperCharge adapter, and what’s interesting is that this is a combo adapter where you can use a USB-C or USB-A port. There’s a USB-C to USB-C cable.
On the right side of the box, there’s the SIM ejector pin on the outside. Then, there is the Rotating Stand Aramid Fiber Case, which was very functional, and more on that later.

Design – Ultra Thin, Ultra Elegant
If you felt that foldables were too bulky, this one really changes the game. It unfolds at just 3.6mm thin, where the phone is super slim that it makes my wallet look thick, which is rare.
But it’s also thinner than most smartphones or even thinner than some tablets.
Now, to put it into perspective, it is like stacking two coins, where even the battery is ultra-thin at just 1.9mm.
And what’s even more mind-blowing is that when it’s all folded, it is almost the same size as the Z Fold6, and that is three screens folded, my friends!
And all of this is while packing the 5,600mAh battery, which has 66W of wired and 50W of wireless charging. But overall, the phone was really strong.
But how does this phone actually work?
The Impossible Folding Mechanism – Real Innovation
So, most foldables fold inward or outward, but this does both. Now, this has been an engineering nightmare for years. Why? Because screens either handle compression or tension, but not both.
So, HUAWEI introduced a multidirectional flexible material. Now, this makes the screen 25% more bend-resistant with 30% stronger resistance against impacts.
But they didn’t stop there because they use the non-Newtonian fluid material, which means that when you apply force, it is very rigid, but when at rest, it stays soft.
So yes, this is some next-level material science.
The Hinge – A Masterpiece of Engineering
A foldable is only as good as its hinges, and this one is on another level. It uses the advanced precision hinge system.
The outward folding side has an integrated link structure, making it 23% thinner, and the inward hinge has an embedded rail system, reducing thickness by 16%.
And the 100% core components are made with ultra-high-strength steel that offers deformation resistance of 1900 MPa.
So, it’s not just durable, but it feels premium as well.
How Does It Work?
Alright, if you’re wondering, how does this trifold even work in daily life? Because let’s be real, gimmicks are cool, but if it doesn’t make your life easier, then what’s the point?
Well, turns out that the HUAWEI Mate XT isn’t just a flex—it is actually super practical.
When fully unfolded, you get an edge-to-edge immersive display that maximizes the screen real estate, where it’s a massive 10.2-inch Hi-Res HUAWEI X-True™ Display with a 3K ultra-high resolution. But together with the thin bezels all around, it is perfect for entertainment, work, and multitasking.
On a single-screen mode, it is 6.41 inches, but when it’s on the dual-screen mode, it is 7.93 inches, which is roughly a square aspect ratio, where even the creases are incredibly small.
Unlike traditional foldables or tablets, the HUAWEI Mate XT’s ultra-thin bezels mean you can enjoy watching videos on Netflix, YouTube, or Disney+ without needing an extra device.
So, imagine if you’re on a long flight, where you just unfold the Mate XT and pop in your earbuds, and boom—you’ve got an amazing experience in your hands without carrying an extra tablet when you’re traveling.
So yes, you can totally enjoy your videos even more with this huge of a screen real estate.
Then, with the multi-window support, you can run multiple apps side by side.
Just like a laptop, you can connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and suddenly, the HUAWEI Mate XT turns into a full-fledged workstation.
So, you can imagine opening Google Docs, Notion, and a web browser all at once, eliminating the need for constant app switching. So, it is a PC, tablet, and even a great camera in your pocket!
While other foldables force you to compromise the screen size or the orientation, this Mate XT adapts naturally, where this particular tall aspect ratio makes it the best foldable for vertical video consumption.
And this is, of course, without awkward letterboxing.
Now, of course, because it’s foldable, it unfolds to the perfect vertical viewing device. But together with the Rotating Stand Aramid Fiber Case, as seen in the unboxing earlier, it adds to the experience of a vertical viewing experience and also, at the same time, protects the screen and the back, of course.
So, with this, I’m probably going to hate vertical videos a little less now.
Build & Durability
We’ve seen foldables before, like the HUAWEI Mate X6, but durability is always a concern.
So, if you want to look at a more durable device, then this HUAWEI Mate X6 might be a more compelling choice.
This is because the HUAWEI Mate X6 middle frame is an aviation-grade aluminum for pressure resistance, while the inner screen can actually withstand 150kg of motorcycle—yeah, crazy!
Then, the outer screen is also a 2nd-generation Kunlun Glass, which is extremely drop-resistant.
Then lastly, the architecture has a distributed cooling system because the ultra-thin graphene has better heat dissipation.
So yeah, the HUAWEI Mate X6, as mentioned in my previous video, could be a very viable option.
But now, let’s go back to the HUAWEI Mate XT, shall we?
Cameras
What’s cool is the fact that it also has a top-tier flagship camera, Ultra Aperture XMAGE Camera. It is the type of camera where what you see is what you get—no gimmicks, just crisp, true-to-life images.
What’s even cooler is the fact that they also have the 10-size adjustable physical aperture to switch between f/1.4 to f/4.0, so you have the ultimate flexibility for your shallow depth of field in your photos.
Then, the dedicated 5.5x periscope telephoto lens also produces some crisp and sharp images, especially at night too.
There’s also a 12MP ultra-wide camera, which has a very nice focal length and dynamic range.
But the 12MP dedicated periscope lens was also amazing.
The front camera records up to 4K 30FPS, but the rear cameras can record up to 4K 60FPS with amazing stabilization.
Final Thoughts
So, should you get this?
Well, here’s my take. If you love pushing the absolute edge of innovation, this is the most futuristic foldable ever made.
The official retail price is RM14,999, which is about USD 3,350. And HUAWEI is also offering a screen warranty for up to RM3,999 or USD 895. But it is available for pre-order from the 18th of February onwards, so check the links below.
But whether it’s practical for everyday use depends on the software, long-term durability, and, of course, the price.
For now, HUAWEI has done something insane because they’ve turned science fiction into reality.
That proved that the foldable era is just getting started. At this rate, in 10 years, our phones will probably transform into drones.
But if you want something a little more “traditional” but still cutting-edge, there is the Mate X6 as mentioned earlier, which is also ultra-durable but slightly different hinge tech.
The real question is: are we ready for a phone that can fold into three directions?
