HUAWEI Unveils the Pura X: A Revolutionary Foldable Bridging Book and Clamshell Designs
After launching what is arguably the biggest game-changing foldable smartphone in recent memory, HUAWEI has once again pushed the boundaries of smartphone innovation with the launch of the Pura X, a unique foldable device that seamlessly blends the functionality of a book-style and clamshell design. Unveiled in China, the Pura X boasts a striking 6.3-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a portrait orientation, coupled with a 3.5-inch square cover screen that houses a powerful triple camera system.
The Pura X’s defining feature is its transformative design. When unfolded, it presents a wide clamshell-like experience, measuring a notable 91.7mm in width. However, when folded, the hinge sits along the side, resulting in a more compact form factor of 91.7mm by 74.3mm. This ingenious design allows users to switch between a spacious display for immersive content consumption and a pocket-friendly form for everyday use.
Both the main and cover displays tout LTPO OLED panels with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. The folding screen also boasts an impressive peak brightness of 2,500 nits, ensuring vibrant visuals even in bright environments. The cover screen isn’t just for notifications; it provides access to camera functions, messaging, health apps, calls, and music playback, all without needing to unfold the device.
Camera and Hardware
The Pura X’s camera system seems to be no slouch. The rear setup features a 50MP wide-angle lens with an f/1.6 aperture, an RYYB sensor, and optical image stabilisation (OIS). Accompanying it is a 40MP ultrawide lens with another RYYB sensor, an 8MP telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom and OIS, and the spectral image sensor first seen in the Mate 70 Pro series. For video calls, a 10MP front-facing camera resides in the main display’s punch hole.
Under the hood, HUAWEI has incorporated a teardrop hinge design, utilising 1900 MPa-strong space-grade components. The device also supports satellite connectivity, albeit limited to Chinese satellites and specific memory configurations. Powering the Pura X is a 4,720mAh battery, split into two cells, with support for 66W wired and 40W wireless charging. An advanced heat dissipation system, including a graphite plate with 2000 W/m.k thermal conductivity, ensures optimal performance.
As is customary with HUAWEI, the chipset details remain undisclosed, with the company maintaining its silence on the matter. Interestingly, the Pura X runs on AOSP HarmonyOS 5.0, rather than the more recent HarmonyOS Next.

The Pura X is available in both a regular and a Collector’s Edition. The latter features exclusive panel designs and comes with 16GB of RAM. Colour options include Black, White, and Silver for the regular edition, and Pattern Green and Pattern Red for the Collector’s Edition.
