HUAWEI Rumoured to Take On the iPhone Air With Their Own Ultra-Thin Smartphone
HUAWEI is reportedly accelerating development on a new, ultra-slim flagship smartphone, positioning the device as a direct competitor to Apple’s recently launched ultra-thin iPhone Air. According to leaks, the Chinese technology giant is aiming to produce a handset that surpasses the rival model in thinness while maintaining high performance.
The move comes as slim smartphones gain traction in the global market, exemplified by devices like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. Industry insider SmartPikachu suggests that HUAWEI’s new device is currently undergoing internal testing with the express goal of beating the 5.5mm profile attributed to the iPhone Air.
To achieve this, HUAWEI is rumoured to be packing next-generation specifications into the slim chassis. Key features reportedly include a robust, high-performance Kirin chipset, speculation points to the Kirin 9030 5G, and an unprecedented super-large 2TB storage option. Crucially, the phone is also expected to feature a silicon battery with a larger capacity, aiming to solve the common trade-off where ultra-slim designs sacrifice battery life.
The report also highlights HUAWEI’s continued push into innovative connectivity. The new ultra-thin device is expected to be an eSIM-only version, potentially eliminating the physical SIM card slot. This aligns with the company’s broader efforts to roll out advanced eSIM management features across its entire device ecosystem later this year.
While the new phone is currently in the testing phase, unconfirmed rumours suggest it could be branded as the “Mate 80 Air,” linking it to the anticipated Mate 80 flagship series. Sources indicate the new handset could be officially unveiled and go on sale as early as Q4 2025, marking HUAWEI’s assertive entry into the premium, ultra-slim category and setting the stage for a dramatic showdown with Apple in the high-end smartphone arena.
