Tech giants Microsoft and Samsung are teaming up to develop a cutting-edge mixed reality (MR) headset. According to industry sources, the two companies have entered into a partnership where Samsung Display will supply OLED on silicon (OLEDoS) panels for Microsoft’s upcoming MR device.

This new headset positions itself as a gaming and multimedia powerhouse, rather than a Metaverse-focused device. It’s expected to hit the market in 2026. This will happen once the development and production of the OLEDoS panels are finalised.

Samsung Display has formed a dedicated team, the “M Project,” to spearhead the development of OLEDoS technology. Moreover, this advanced display technology is crucial for achieving high-resolution, low-power, and compact displays required for immersive MR experiences. The collaboration also involves Samsung System LSI, responsible for the silicon board design, and Samsung Foundry, handling the chip manufacturing process.

The complex production process for OLEDoS panels involves multiple steps, including wafer fabrication, organic material deposition, encapsulation, colour filter and micro lens array integration. Samsung Display is leading in certain areas. However, the overall collaboration between the different Samsung divisions highlights the company’s commitment. They dedicate themselves to mastering this cutting-edge technology.

Interestingly, Samsung’s own smartphone division, MX Business, has expressed interest in OLEDoS technology for its MR device. However, it has opted for Sony as its panel supplier. This competitive pressure is likely driving Samsung Display to excel in its partnership with Microsoft. The company aims to secure additional business within the Samsung group.
