POCO M3 Pro 5G: Unboxing & First Impressions

The POCO M3 was a very well received device as it was considered to be a great bang for your buck device. So when POCO announced the POCO M3 Pro 5G, I wanted to see how well this device stacked up against the competition, and if POCO had released another bang for your buck device.

But first, here is the unboxing and first impressions of the POCO M3 Pro 5G.

Unboxing

Taking a look at the box, it comes in the typical POCO yellow box with POCO M3 Pro right in the middle.

Then at the bottom of the box, you will see the variant that you picked and the colour choice. In my case it is the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage in the colour of Power Black.

Opening the box, there is a smaller yellow box with the SIM ejector pin on the outside, where in there you will find:

  • POCO stickers
  • the Manuals
  • the clear phone case

Underneath, you will find the phone itself.

Below that, there is:

  • the USB-A to USB-C cable, and
  • the 22.5W charging brick.

Build & Design

Looking at the device, it comes in a plastic shell with a pretty minimal finish at the back in this Power Black variant. The phone has a glossy finish to it and the cool part is when the light catches it right, you can sort of see a slight gradient starting from the camera bump.

You will also find a REALLY huge POCO branding below the camera module. Speaking of the camera module, the camera bump was medium sized and it does wobble a bit when you type it on a surface.

So overall, I would say the phone feels good in the hands, just that I am not a huge fan of the extremely huge POCO branding at the back, but then again this comes down to a personal preference.

Ports & Buttons

Next, taking a look at the ports and buttons, down below other than the USB-C port, there is the mono speaker grills.

Then on the right, there are the volume rockers and the side mounted fingerprint sensor and power button, which unlocks decently quick.

On the left there is the SIM ejector and microSD card slot.

Then on top there is the headphones jack, the microphones and the usual IR Blaster.

Display

Looking at the display of the phone, the POCO M3 Pro comes with a 6.5-inch Full HD+ 1080×2400 pixel display. It has a 90Hz refresh rate which is really nice to see at this price point.

The display is also what POCO calls a Dynamic Switch display which means the refresh rate will vary between 30Hz, 50Hz, and 60Hz that would apparently come in a software update.

So overall upon first impressions, the display looks pretty decent, especially within this price range.

Cameras

In terms of the camera, the POCO M3 Pro comes with a “TRIPLE” camera setup

  • a 48MP f/1.79 26mm wide lens,
  • a 2MP f/2.4 macro lens, and
  • a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor

You guys know how I feel about this kind of camera setup, similar to the Redmi Note 10 5G, I would consider this just a single camera setup as there is only one useful lens.

The front facing camera is an 8MP f/2.0 wide sensor

Both the front and rear cameras only support video up to 1080p @ 30fps, where overall the photos look decent and video recording for the rear cameras was nice. Then as for the front, it is also good with great image stabilization.

Specifications

As for the insides of the phone, powering the M3 Pro is a MediaTek Dimensity 700, which is built on the 7nm process. This chip seems to be becoming the norm for midrange chips as it provides good performance and allows for 5G connectivity at a decent price.

The phone is also rocking the Mali G57 MC2 GPU which is rather decent at this price point.

Battery

As for battery, the phone has a 5000 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging but the charging brick has a maximum charge of 22.5 watt as mentioned earlier.

This is a rather big battery so it will be interesting to see how it performs in the long run especially since the chip powering the device is really efficient as well.

Software

In terms of software, the phone comes with MIUI 12 for POCO on top of Android 11, and as of making of this video, it was updated to version 12.0.8.

My thoughts on MIUI 12 overall are still that it’s not at its best still compared to the POCO F3 so I will have to test it out further to see how my overall experience is using this device, especially since it has a smooth 90Hz refresh rate display.

Price

Then finally, looking at the price here in Malaysia, the POCO M3 Pro launches at RM699 for the 4/64 and RM799 for the 6/128 and it comes in three colours, POCO Yellow, Power Black and Cool Blue. It goes on sale on the 6th of June exclusively on Shopee where I will leave links down below for you guys to get yourself one.
