Beyond Gemini: Samsung Explores OpenAI and Perplexity for Galaxy AI
Samsung is reportedly seeking to broaden its artificial intelligence capabilities on its flagship Galaxy smartphones, exploring partnerships with leading AI firms OpenAI and Perplexity. This strategic move aims to diversify the AI models available to users, moving beyond its current primary reliance on Google’s Gemini.
Diversifying AI Partnerships
For years, Samsung has collaborated with Google to integrate Gemini into its Galaxy devices. However, a new report from Bloomberg indicates that the South Korean tech giant is keen on offering its users more choice. Choi Won-Joon, president and COO of Samsung’s mobile division, confirmed to Bloomberg that the company is in discussions with various AI vendors.
Choi stated that Samsung is engaging with multiple vendors and is open to any AI agent that is competitive and can provide the best user experiences. This statement underscores Samsung’s commitment to delivering a superior user experience by providing access to a wider array of advanced AI models.
This diversification strategy, reminiscent of Apple’s approach to technology partnerships, is particularly focused on the upcoming Galaxy S26 series. The goal is to empower Galaxy S26 users with the flexibility to choose their preferred AI model.
Potential Perplexity Integration
Reports from June already hinted at Samsung nearing a deal with Perplexity. This potential agreement could see Perplexity’s services and technologies preloaded onto Samsung phones, with its search features possibly integrated directly into the Samsung Internet Browser and even the Bixby assistant. Earlier discussions also suggested Perplexity’s assistant might become the default option and that the two companies were exploring the development of an “AI-infused” operating system and a dedicated “AI agents” app to support various AI assistants.

By engaging with rivals in the AI space, Samsung appears poised to enhance its Galaxy ecosystem, offering a more versatile and user-centric AI experience in the competitive smartphone market.
