WhatsApp Introduces New Message Translation Feature for Global Communication

WhatsApp Rolls Out In-App Message Translation

WhatsApp is rolling out a new message translation feature designed to break down language barriers and foster deeper connections among its global user base. The new functionality allows users to translate messages directly within chats without leaving the app.

According to a company statement, the feature was developed to address the challenges of communicating across different languages. Users can now simply long-press a message, tap the ‘Translate’ option, and select their desired language. The translated version is then displayed, and users can download the language pack for future use. The feature is available for one-on-one chats, group conversations, and Channel updates.

A unique benefit for Android users is the ability to enable automatic translation for an entire chat thread. This ensures that all future incoming messages in that conversation are translated instantly, providing a seamless communication experience.

The company emphasised its commitment to user privacy, stating that the translations occur on the user’s device. This on-device processing means that WhatsApp cannot access or view the content of the translations, maintaining the end-to-end encryption and privacy of conversations.

The rollout of the new feature is beginning today and will be gradual. Initially, Android users will have access to translations in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. Meanwhile, iPhone users will see the feature launched with support for over 19 languages.

WhatsApp hopes this new capability will make it easier for users to connect with family, friends, and communities around the world, making language a tool for connection rather than a hurdle. The company has indicated that more languages will be added to the feature in the future.
