At Microsoft’s event today, the company finally unveiled Windows 11, their latest operating system and here is everything that is new.
The first major change is the entire aesthetic of Windows. The most notable is the fact that the Start menu is now at the centre of the task bar and there are no longer Start Menu Live Tiles. Instead of the Tiles, there is now a simplified menu which looks similar to an Android launcher. The entire UI is also now a lot more translucent and there are a lot more rounded corners.
The other big change has been the Microsoft Store. The store has now been rebuilt from the ground up to help improve speed and search. The biggest change is probably the fact that you can now run Android apps on Windows 11 using Intel Bridge. Downloading Android Apps on your Windows PC or laptop will be done through the Amazon Appstore which you can get through the Microsoft Store.
One of the most useful features announced is probably the Snap Layouts feature. This feature will allow you to tile multiple windows in a variety of layouts on your display and it will also allow you to save the layout in a Snap Group.
There is also Windows Widgets which is similar to what is available on the Microsoft Launcher for Android. It is a custom feed of widgets such as your calendar, weather or to do list that will be displayed with a swipe in from the left. Microsoft also says that Windows 11 has better touch support to help support these widgets. Microsoft Teams is also now natively built in to Windows 11.
In terms of gaming, the first big change is the Auto HDR feature which updates your games lighting and colour into HDR. This should provide gamers with a much better gaming experience. The next announcement for gaming was DirectStorage which lets the system load up assets to the GPU without needing to bog down your CPU. This provides faster load times and less stress on your processor. Microsoft also announced that Xbox Game Pass is coming to Windows 11.
Windows 11 will be available to download by the holiday season this year and will be free of charge for Windows 10 users. The Windows Insiders beta build will be available next week.
