The announcement, made via EGS’s Twitter account, emphasises their core values: “Same fair terms, available to all developers, on a true multi-platform store – with amazing games for everyone.” This echoes their PC store’s revenue split, where developers receive a significantly higher cut (88%) compared to Epic’s 12% share. This developer-friendly approach could significantly impact the mobile market, which has traditionally been known for steeper revenue cuts for creators.
While specific details remain under wraps, the EGS mobile app is expected to function similarly to established PC game launchers. Players can expect features such as browsing and managing their game library. They can also connect and chat with friends online. Additionally, they might be able to purchase games directly through the app. These functionalities mirror those offered by Steam’s mobile app.
A precise release date hasn’t been announced, but we can expect the EGS mobile app to arrive sometime later this year. One of the biggest questions hanging in the air is whether the ever-popular Fortnite will be playable through the app. Currently, Fortnite mobile requires downloads from the Epic Games website, the Samsung Galaxy Store, or utilizes cloud gaming services on Android. Whether Epic will integrate Fortnite into their mobile store or keep it separate remains to be seen.
The EGS mobile app has a developer-centric approach and established brand recognition. It has the potential to become a major player in the mobile gaming space. However, it remains uncertain if they can attract a user base loyal to existing storefronts like Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Only time will tell if Epic’s mobile expansion will be a game-changer. One thing is certain: the mobile gaming landscape just got a lot more interesting.
