Samsung Electronics has announced the development of the industry’s first LPDDR5X DRAM. It boasts the highest performance, reaching up to 10.7 gigabits-per-second (Gbps). This innovation signifies Samsung’s continued leadership in low-power DRAM.

“As the demand for low-power, high-performance memory surges, LPDDR DRAM applications are poised to expand beyond mobile devices. We expect them to reach areas traditionally requiring stronger performance and reliability, such as PCs, servers, accelerators, and automobiles,” said YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung. “Through close collaboration with our customers, Samsung will keep innovating and delivering optimized solutions for the emerging on-device AI era.”

Powering the Rise of On-Device AI with Enhanced Performance and Efficiency

The rise of AI applications has fuelled the importance of on-device AI, which allows for direct processing on devices. This trend emphasizes the need for low-power, high-performance LPDDR memory.

Samsung’s 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X offers significant improvements over the previous generation. Performance is enhanced by more than 25%, and capacity by more than 30%. Additionally, it expands the single package capacity of mobile DRAM up to 32 gigabytes (GB), making it ideal for the on-device AI era’s demands for high-performance, high-capacity, and low-power memory.

The LPDDR5X includes specialised power-saving technologies. These technologies optimise power variation, adjusting it based on workload. They also extend low-power mode intervals for longer energy-saving periods. These advancements deliver a 25% improvement in power efficiency compared to the previous generation. This translates to extended battery life for mobile devices and minimised total cost of ownership (TCO) for servers by reducing energy consumption during data processing.
