Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Aims to Position Malaysia as a Global Leader in Artificial Intelligence
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has articulated a bold vision to position Malaysia among the top 20 countries in artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking through Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud at the International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Computing, Engineering, and Education Science (InvENT 2024) at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Anwar emphasised the need for a unified effort across all sectors to achieve this goal.
Central to this vision is the development of a robust national AI ecosystem. Anwar highlighted plans to establish a Centre of Excellence for AI research and learning, alongside the creation of a Malaysian AI cloud computing system. These initiatives are designed to support innovation and ensure Malaysia’s competitiveness in the global AI landscape.
However, Anwar stressed that alongside technological advancement, ethical considerations must guide AI development. He cautioned against the risks posed by AI, particularly deep fake technology, which can distort reality and undermine public trust. “Deep fake technology can erode trust in digital realities, fundamentally altering public perceptions and compromising the integrity of information,” Anwar warned.
To address these risks, Anwar called for comprehensive regulatory frameworks. The government’s proactive approach includes participation in regional digital economy initiatives like the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) and the introduction of legislation such as the Cyber Security Bill 2024. Additionally, amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 [Act 709] and the development of a national data-sharing bill are in progress to enhance digital governance.
Anwar’s vision underscores the importance of responsible AI development, positioning Malaysia as a leader in both innovation and ethical AI practices on the global stage.
