So, here’s a question: Do you really need a RM4,000 to RM5,000 flagship phone just to get a flagship camera? Well, this is the Xiaomi 15T Pro, which has the Leica Summilux lens, a proper real 5x telephoto camera, and the largest display ever on a T series, all with a very good price (from RM2,699).
And once you see what this 5x zoom shot can do, including the other areas that made this phone shine, this phone will let you decide with your own eyes.
Design & Build
From a design’s perspective, this has to be one of the best-looking T-series phones from Xiaomi. The previous Xiaomi T series design always seems like it was an afterthought when it comes to having a very unique design, and this is because of the fact that it was very well known to be a more camera-centric phone.
This Gray color variant looks amazing, and the curved edges also made it feel nicer to hold, too. The matte finish at the back almost feels like Xiaomi was daring you to get your fingerprints on this.
Like the previous generation, Xiaomi is giving you an IP68 rating with up to 3m underwater. This gives you better pressure tolerance versus typical 1.5m ratings. So, yes, this phone would be extra handy if you use the phone near a pool, rain, or even waterfalls as well.
Then, the front screen has been upgraded to the Corning Gorilla Glass 7i compared to just the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 last year.
So, based on my first impressions, as mentioned, it is a really nice phone to look at and it feels very great when I was using this daily.
Display
But one huge upgrade is the phone screen, as there is a jump from 6.67-inch to 6.83-inch. The screen is not only nice and large, but the bezels are also 27% thinner than last year’s 14T Pro. So, you’ll be looking at more screens and less chin. The screen can go up to 144 Hz, which can be adjusted dynamically, which was really great.
It also comes with a 1.5K resolution panel, which is a nice sweet spot as it is sharper than 1080p but also lighter on the battery, which is perfect for long Netflix sessions.
Speaking of Netflix, this Xiaomi 15T Pro has the Widevine L1 playback specification together with HDR 10 and also Dolby Vision certified as well. So, the HDR content looks very bright, clean, and sharp without losing any details on the shadow as well.
The screen has up to 3,200 nits of peak brightness, and this high value is slowly becoming a standard for a lot of phones these days. So, it’s really great that a phone within this price range has this kind of peak brightness since outdoor visibility is very important, especially here in Malaysia or any other countries, whether or not it’s the midday sun or even an afternoon sun. This was very visible indeed.
Because the screen is also flat, scrolling feels very smooth. Typing on the phone also feels so much easier, even on the stock Xiaomi keyboard.
Performance & Thermals
Under the hood, this comes with a MediaTek Dimensity 9400+, which is a 3nm process chipset. MediaTek has come a long way from being just a budget chipset to being one of the most efficient chipsets out there.
And using the phone daily feels fast because of the chipset’s big cores, plus the efficient scheduler. This gives fewer slowdowns when the background task kicks in. So, you can expect app launches to be instant, the multitasking also to be very snappy, and gaming to still stay very stable throughout the whole entire time.
When it comes to overall gameplay on a quick gaming test, the frame pacing was very consistent, and it’s great to know that the phone stayed cool and just warm towards the end of 20 minutes of continuous gaming.
Then there’s also the Wi-Fi 7 here too if your router supports that. So, it is a future kind of device.
Battery & Charging
Battery size is 5,500 mAh of battery, and with a mixed use of using the phone’s cameras, social media with the 144 Hz dynamic refresh rate enabled, I keep having about 2 days of battery life at around 25 to 30% at the end of the day.
Charging is also very quick, up to 90 W, and has up to 50 W of wireless charging. And yes, the charger does come inside of the box.
But the main story about the phone is consistency because the phone’s performance doesn’t dip significantly even at the lower battery levels.
Cameras
It’s time for the main headline, or the reason why you clicked this video is because Xiaomi is bringing the Leica Summilux Optical Lens and Tuning into this kind of price bracket where you usually get good enough cameras within this price range.
Firstly, this tuning gives you two very important factors: Number one, the color science that looks natural but dramatic when you really want it.
Number two, would be the better micro-contrast. So, skin textures and fabrics don’t look very plasticky.
And finally, number three, (bonus factor!) is the amazing low-light behavior because this favors detail retention without crushing the shadows.
Like the flagship Xiaomi 15 series, you can use the zoom-like dial in the camera app, letting you choose the different zoom values.
Based on my test, the Ultrawide lens at 15mm were really nice, but the 23mm Main lens was your everyday story with an amazing balance of highlights and great dynamic range as well.
But the Telephoto lenses are where it is at because at 46mm, you’re getting a nice middle ground of the in-sensor zoom shots.
In-sensor zoom shots, in case you didn’t know, crops from the high-quality data regions of the sensor pipeline. So, it preserves the details better compared to a basic digital zoom, which is perfect for portrait shots and also buildings or even street shots as seen in the samples.
Speaking of unique shots, this phone also has the Fast Shot Mode, which was previously only available on the flagship Xiaomi 15 or the Xiaomi 15 Ultra where not only the shutter speed is really quick or the shutter button was really quick, but there are also several focal lengths to choose from over here as well in this particular mode.
Then the Portrait mode was also really nice where in the camera app you can directly choose between 23mm, 46mm, and 115mm as well.
But my favorite among all has to do with the Periscope lens, which is the 5x optical zoom at 115mm because this captures some of the very intricate details of structures or just capturing candid moments from a distance. This is where many mid-rangers struggle, especially at night.
But the amount of detail that you get into this 5x telephoto lenses, even at night, was really amazing as it balances out the highlights and the shadows very well. Since it is an optical zoom, you won’t get any sort of a noise on the darker areas when taking photos at night too.
And also at this 115mm focal length, it is a very versatile lens because of the natural compression, focuses on the subjects better, making it look like a macro shot, but at the same time, it is a very good lens to capture moments at the scene where it flatters the face and also gives you a choice to take photos if you really can’t move closer to the object.
So, it’s a really great thing to know that this phone within this price range has a very high-quality 115mm 5x optical zoom quality because, remember, you usually only get such periscope lenses only for flagship smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra or even the new Pixel 10 Pro series, which of course, those flagships are very expensive and is more pricier than this.
Besides the 5x 115mm optical zoom, even the 10x zoom or the 230mm had a very nice optical grade zoom too, where I can zoom accordingly, even up to 100x ultra zoom, which is a 2,300mm that uses AI-enhanced zoom.
Video Recording
Video-wise, the colors are also consistent across all of the lenses from the ultra-wide lenses to the main lenses and even the telephoto 5x zoom as well.
There were no jumps of exposure changes, which happens a lot on other smartphones, especially even in some flagship phones as well, where it kept the consistent exposure throughout the video recording of this phone.
The recording resolution can go up to 8K 30 frames per second and up to 4K 120 frames per second on the main lenses, and the ultrawide lenses can record up to 4K 30 fps.
But the 2x and the 5x zoom can go up to 60 fps at 4K resolutions. And once again, you can’t find this kind of specs or even recording resolution when it comes to a phone within this price range where you usually find it on flagships or even the Ultra series, which was really great to know.
Conclusion
So, with all of this, it shows that spec sheets alone don’t take great photos or videos. It is also in the tuning as well. With the Leica Summilux Tuning and genuinely useful 5x telephoto lens, this Xiaomi 15T Pro crosses the line from “good enough” to “I can print that.”
Add that with the 6.83-inch 1.5K 3,200 nits display and with a huge 5,500 mAh of battery, this T series is growing up to be the best that it can offer for its price.
