YouTube Recap 2025 Rolls Out: How to Check Your Year in Video

YouTube Unveils YouTube 2025 Recap: Are You a ‘Sunshiner’ or a ‘Philosopher’?

YouTube has officially launched YouTube Recap 2025, a comprehensive retrospective that goes beyond music to analyse users’ entire video consumption history for the year. Rolling out starting December 2 in North America and globally later this week, the feature offers a personalised look at the creators, trends, and “eras” that defined the last 12 months.

While competitors like Spotify Wrapped have long dominated the year-end conversation with music data, YouTube’s 2025 Recap aims to capture the broader cultural zeitgeist. According to Manthra Panchapakesan, Product Manager at YouTube, the feature was developed through nine rounds of feedback and over 50 concept tests to ensure it reflected how users actually engage with the platform.

The “Personality” of Your Watch History

The headline feature of the 2025 Recap is the introduction of User Personalities. Similar to gaming RPG classes or Myers-Briggs types, the Recap assigns users one of several personas based on their viewing habits.

  • The Common Types: “The Sunshiner,” “The Wonder Seeker,” and “The Connector” were among the most frequently assigned personalities, reflecting users who seek positivity, education, and community, respectively.
  • The Rare Types: For those with more niche or intense viewing habits, the “Philosopher” and “Dreamer” personas appear less frequently.
  • Other Personas: The system also identifies “Adventurers,” “Skill Builders,” and “Creative Spirits.”

2025 Trends: Labubu, KATSEYE, and Keyboards

The Recap also highlights the specific “eras” users lived through in 2025. YouTube’s announcement blog highlighted several key trends that dominated the year’s watch time:

  • The Labubu Craze: 2025 was the year of the blind box. The “Labubu” vinyl figures from Pop Mart became a global obsession, with unboxing videos and “blind box reveals” flooding the platform.
  • KATSEYE’s Breakout Year: The global girl group KATSEYE was cited as a major musical force, with fans tracking their journey from debut to global stardom.
  • Niche Hobbies: The report specifically noted the “Custom Keyboard Era” as a prime example of the deep-dive hobbies YouTube users flocked to this year.

How to Access It

The Recap is now available to North American users and will be accessible to the rest of the world within the week.

  • Where to find it: The Recap appears as a prompt on the Homepage or permanently under the “You” tab on both mobile and desktop apps.
  • The Format: It is presented as a series of up to 12 shareable cards, optimised for social media stories.

Music Integration

For users who primarily use YouTube for audio, the Recap integrates seamlessly with YouTube Music. It provides cards for Top Artists and Top Songs, with an option to “dive deeper” into genre breakdowns and international listening stats directly within the YouTube Music app.

“You aren’t just one thing, and neither is your watch history,” said Panchapakesan in the official announcement. “Recap was made for you, by you.”
