PSP Poised for a Return to Challenge Handheld Kings
Get ready for a blast from the past! Rumours are circulating that PlayStation is bringing back the PlayStation Portable. This move is seen as a bid to compete with some of the hottest handheld consoles on the market. These include the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and ASUS ROG Ally.
Unlike the PlayStation Vita, which focused on streaming, this PSP reboot reportedly packs a punch, handling PS4-level games. This positions it against the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, targeting high-performance gaming on the go, not the Switch’s focus on ported titles and exclusives.
The leak comes from ResetEra forum journalist Anton Logvinov, known for spilling the beans on PlayStation exclusives coming to PC. He claims the new PlayStation Portable will run PS4 games and launch alongside titles already on PC and Steam Deck.
This news follows February’s rumors of a custom AMD APU processor designed for both PS4 and PS5 compatibility. While the AMD Ryzen Z1 Series APU seems perfect for the new PSP, Logvinov suggests PS5 support might be a future upgrade.
Handheld Market Heats Up as Dedicated Consoles Shine
The gaming industry’s embrace of handhelds, with entries like the Lenovo Legion Go and MSI Claw, underscores the enduring appeal of dedicated consoles. Even with powerful smartphones, the Nintendo Switch’s success proves there’s room for a resurgent PSP in the handheld arena.
