AirAsia Introduces New Safety Measures for Electronic Devices
AirAsia will soon be implementing new regulations concerning the carriage and use of power banks on all its flights, which are set to take effect on 1 April 2025. In doing so, the airline aims to align itself with evolving aviation safety standards. Moreover, this decision follows similar announcements made by other carriers in the region.
AirAsia recently shared new guidelines on X. Passengers must now carry all power banks in their carry-on baggage. Additionally, they must keep these devices on their person throughout the flight. Power banks should be placed securely under the seat or in the seat pocket. Storing power banks in checked baggage or in the overhead compartments will be strictly prohibited.
Travel Advisory: Starting 1 Apr 2025, #AirAsia is enhancing its power bank policy for safer flights.
✔️ Carry-on only (not in checked baggage)
✔️ Max 100Wh / 20,000mAh (100-160Wh needs approval)
❌ No usage or charging onboard
❌ No storage in overhead bins— AirAsia (@airasia) March 26, 2025
Adding to the new rules, AirAsia will also be prohibiting the use or charging of power banks at any point during the flight.
Crucially, the airline will also be enforcing limitations based on the Watt-hour (Wh) rating of power banks. Passengers will be permitted to carry up to five power banks, each with a capacity not exceeding 100Wh. For devices with a rating between 100Wh and 160Wh, passengers will need to obtain prior approval from AirAsia, and the allowance is limited to a maximum of two such power banks per person. Any power bank exceeding 160Wh will not be allowed on board.
Important Information for Travelers
This upcoming change will undoubtedly require air travelers to adjust their packing habits. With the Hari Raya holidays approaching, travelers flying with AirAsia should be aware of new restrictions. It is important to consider these changes carefully to avoid any issues at the airport.
AirAsia has assured passengers that safety reminders regarding these new power bank regulations will be prominently displayed at check-in counters. Additionally, in-flight announcements will be made during boarding to further reinforce these guidelines.
