Apple Announces Lossless Audio and Ultra-Low Latency for AirPods Max
Apple is poised to significantly elevate the audio experience on its premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max, with a major software update slated for next month. The update will introduce highly anticipated features: lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio, promising an unparalleled listening experience and enhanced capabilities for music creators and gamers alike.
The upcoming firmware update is expected to roll out in April, alongside iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4. More importantly, it will unlock 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio for AirPods Max equipped with a USB-C port. As a result, users will be able to hear their music exactly as the artist intended, preserving the nuances and fidelity of the original recordings. Furthermore, lossless audio will enhance Personalised Spatial Audio, delivering a more accurate, uncompressed, and truly immersive sound experience. Apple Music subscribers will be able to enjoy over 100 million songs in this pristine audio quality.
Empowering Music Creation Professionals
Beyond casual listening, the update is set to be a game-changer for music production. Lossless audio and ultra-low latency will significantly enhance the way music creators use their AirPods Max in professional workflows. Specifically, this applies to platforms like Logic Pro and other music production applications. Moreover, with the included USB-C cable, AirPods Max will be the only headphones that allow musicians to create and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Furthermore, this feature, combined with high-resolution digital audio and minimal delay, ensures that artists can record and mix seamlessly. As a result, they can work without any compromise in audio fidelity.
Enhanced Gaming and Livestreaming Experiences
Gamers and livestreamers are also set to benefit from the ultra-low latency audio. By drastically reducing lag time to a level comparable with the native built-in speakers on Mac, iPad, and iPhone, the update will ensure a responsive and immersive experience. The elimination of noticeable response delays will make gameplay and livestreaming sessions smoother and more engaging for users.
Free Update Coming in April
The new update will be available as a free firmware upgrade for AirPods Max with a USB-C port.
