Asus Announces Updated ROG Ally X: More Power, Better Battery Life

ASUS revealed the ROG Ally X, a refresh of their popular handheld gaming PC. While not a full sequel, the Ally X boasts several improvements based on user feedback.

Details remain scarce, with a full reveal coming June 2nd. However, some key upgrades are confirmed.

ROG Ally X comes with improved performance and storage

The Ally X ditches the original’s silver shell for a sleek black design. More importantly, it packs a larger battery for significantly improved playtime – leaks suggest aiming for double the original’s 90 minutes. This upgrade may add some weight, along with revised grips for better handling.

Performance should remain similar, with the Ally X keeping the Z1 Extreme chipset and the same screen. Storage and RAM get a bump, with the Ally X featuring an extended M.2 2280 SSD slot and more RAM than its predecessor. The problematic SD card reader is also being replaced with a model from ASUS’s laptop lineup.

Higher price point and Armoury Crate update

The price is expected to climb for the Ally X, though the exact increase remains unknown.

The livestream focused heavily on an update to the Armoury Crate software, ASUS’s centralised game library. This update aims to streamline the gaming experience within Windows 11. A key highlight is the ability to share button mappings with other Ally users, a feature coming to both existing Ally consoles and the Ally X in July.

With a focus on improved battery life, storage, and user-requested tweaks, the ROG Ally X appears to be a solid upgrade for fans of the original console. Stay tuned for the full reveal on June 2nd for a deeper look at the Ally X’s specs and pricing.
