ChatGPT to Start Showing Ads for Free and Go Users
TL;DR: OpenAI is testing ads in ChatGPT for “Free” and “Go” users in the US. Ads will be relevant to conversation topics (e.g., recipe ads for cooking queries) but will not influence the AI’s answers. Paid subscribers on Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans will remain ad-free.
After the initial announcement last month, OpenAI has officially announced that it will begin testing advertisements within ChatGPT, marking a significant shift in how the platform monetises its massive user base. The test will primarily affect users on the “Free” and “Go” subscription tiers in the United States.
According to a recent blog post, the move is designed to support the ongoing costs of providing free access to the AI service. “Our goal is for ads to support broader access to more powerful ChatGPT features while maintaining the trust people place in ChatGPT for important and personal tasks,” the company stated.
How It Works

OpenAI emphasised that the ads will not influence the AI’s responses. Instead, they will be relevant to the context of the conversation. For example, if a user is asking for dinner recipes, ChatGPT might display an ad for a meal kit delivery service or a grocery app.
The company assured users that ads would be clearly labelled as “sponsored” and visually distinct from the organic content. Importantly, users on the Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise tiers will not see any advertisements.
Privacy Controls
Addressing potential privacy concerns, OpenAI stated that it will not share personal conversations with advertisers. Ad targeting will be based on broad topics and interaction history within the ad units themselves, rather than mining chat logs for personal data. Users will also have the ability to manage their ad preferences and opt out of personalised tracking.
This pilot program is currently limited to the US, but it signals a new chapter for the generative AI market as companies look for sustainable business models beyond subscriptions.
