DON’T Let THIS Happen To YOU! 😭 : Check THIS before you buy ANY electronic devices!

Now, in case you all did not know, my first YouTube video was actually on a smart bulb because my original plan on the content here on Adam Lobo TV was based on smart home appliances. And back then, which was about 6 years ago, smart home appliances in Malaysia were super rare, and those smart devices that were not available here in Malaysia were brought in without the certification as a communications equipment and MCMC Label.

So, what’s the big deal then, you might say? Well, believe it or not, there have been some behind-the-scenes occasions, where not only I got electrocuted when I was fixing the smart bulb or the smart plug, but there were also times when there were connection issues, where there were issues between the devices and the network in my home and the list goes on, and eventually, this channel became a review channel based on smartphone devices.

However, whether it is a smart home appliance or a smartphone or any smart devices that comes with connectivity features, it is important for us to be aware that a USE or a SALE of non-certified communications and wireless equipment is an OFFENSE under the law!

So in this video, I am going to talk about things that you need to know about certification of communications equipment and why your next equipment needs to have the MCMC Label.

What Is MCMC Label?

Firstly, MCMC label is a mandatory certification mark indicating that the communications equipment is certified for compliance within the standards as required under the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000.

Nowadays, you will see a certification mark which looks something like this…

which are in two types – a physical label in the form of engraved and embossed stickers

and there is also the electronic label that is stored inside of the device’s operating system.

Why Do Your Communications Equipment Need The MCMC Label?

Well, devices with MCMC label indicate that it has been tested and verified that the devices comply with standards. The process is to ensure that the devices are safe, can interoperate, do not cause radio frequency interference and are not counterfeit.

So firstly, having devices without MCMC label is deemed extremely risky, as these devices may not be safe to use. For example, if the communications equipment or devices are electrically powered, the use of non-certified communications equipment could lead to a possible injury due to a technical failure of a sub-standard power cord or a charger of the equipment!

Then the second factor is the interoperability or the inter-connectivity of the devices itself. Some of us might be experiencing this but have no idea what is the root cause. One of the symptoms of the interoperability is having intermittent or bad inter-connections between devices.

It can be irritating having inter-connectivity issues when using these smart home devices.. It will change our mood and behavior if we had to go through these issues repeatedly. Worst case scenario, we will be abandoning the devices due to the inter-connectivity issues, and that has happened to me and yes, what a waste.

Then the third factor on why the devices need to have the MCMC label is to ensure that the devices do not cause any radio frequency (RF) interference to other equipment.

MCMC has allocated a set of frequency bands that may be utilized for those wireless devices and just to share with you all, the allocation of these radio frequency bands and the requirements between countries are totally different. Thus, buying wireless smart devices from overseas that operate in the radio frequency or transmit RF power beyond what is permitted locally, may eventually interfere with the communications network or any other equipment. The situation would, without our knowledge, disrupt the operation of the communications network or equipment in the surrounding areas.

Then the last factor on why you need the MCMC label is that you will be rest assured that the communications equipment that you purchase is not a counterfeit or a cloned device.

Is It Illegal Owning Non-Certified Communications and Wireless Equipment?

While it may seem to be the “easy way out” to blame the manufacturers and of course the importers who sell these communications and wireless equipment locally, it’s very important for you to know that using non-certified communications equipment itself is deemed illegal.

Under the Regulation 16 of the Communications and Multimedia Regulations 2000, if a person is to use, offer for sale, sell or have this in his possession with a view to sell the communications equipment which is not certified or does not have the MCMC label is an offense, and shall on conviction to be liable to a fine not exceeding RM300,000 or to imprisonment not exceeding 3 years or both.

So yes, if you think that you can just sell or use these non-certified communications devices… Well, think about it again!

So there you have it, my friends; my conclusion is that we need to be more vigilant about the importance of having the MCMC label, not only for smartphones or smart home devices but also in all of our communications equipment, and that includes wireless devices.

Now, MCMC has introduced the mobile app called “Check Your Label” where you can verify the certification status by entering the IMEI or the serial number to verify the certification status of the devices too.

If you would like to learn more about the Check Your Label campaign and the MCMC label, you can head on to their websites and the Check Your Label social media accounts to find out more information. And with that, I hope you found this video helpful in making your purchase decision when it comes to buying any communication devices to have the MCMC label.
