Google Pay Integrates ShopeePay and TNG eWallet in Malaysia

Google is greatly expanding its Google Pay platform in Malaysia with the inclusion of two of the nation’s leading eWallets: ShopeePay and TNG eWallet (Alipay+ Partner). This is a milestone as it’s Google Pay’s first foray into eWallet integration in the Southeast Asian market.

Google Pay Streamlining Online Payments with Local E-Wallets

This new feature is meant to streamline online purchases for Android consumers in Malaysia. Users, starting today, can checkout conveniently on their go-to mobile sites using the Google Chrome browser through their familiar ShopeePay or TNG eWallet. The launch will start with online partner merchants, and other partners will follow suit in the near future.

The inclusion comes at a time when usage of eWallets is disproportionately high in Malaysia. In 2024, a staggering 88% of Malaysians adopted digital wallets, reflecting their imperative presence in the payment economy in Malaysia. With the inclusion of popular, homegrown local platforms, Google Pay is offering consumers more choice beyond traditional card payments. It is also bringing the convenience of cashless payments to the underbanked segment of society. This move nudges the nation towards a more inclusive digital payments economy.

Enhanced Convenience for Malaysian Online Shoppers

This integration promises to bring a new level of convenience to Malaysians in their everyday online transactions. It covers activities such as online shopping, ordering food delivery, and managing bill payments.

How the New Feature Works

  • Effortless Checkout: When making a purchase on participating online stores, users will have the option to select the prominent Google Pay button at the checkout stage. Alternatively, Chrome will also prompt users to select “eWallet” as a payment method. This allows for direct payment using ShopeePay or TNG eWallet without the need to navigate away from the merchant’s website or switch between different applications.
  • In-App Convenience: Google Pay will now allow users to directly top up their preferred eWallet accounts from within the Google Pay interface. Furthermore, Google has announced that users will soon gain the ability to view their eWallet balances directly within the Google Pay app, offering a unified view of their payment options.
  • Simplified First-Time Use: If you’re using a specific eWallet through Google Pay for the first time, you’ll need to complete a one-time verification process. This step is required to enhance security. Once the simple verification is done, future payments will be much easier. You’ll be able to make seamless one-click transactions without having to switch between apps again.
  • Secure Transactions: Security remains a top priority for Google Pay. All transactions conducted through the platform are protected by robust security measures, with each payment requiring authentication via fingerprint or a personal identification number (PIN).

Initial Merchant Availability

Malaysian consumers can now start using this new integration with merchants powered by Fiuu. For example, popular food chains like Nando’s and US Pizza are already on board. Additionally, the feature is available for merchants using the iPay88 payment gateway. This includes well-known names such as Alpro Pharmacy, TK Bakery, and Yoyo Bus. Users have a wide range of options to experience the convenience of paying with their preferred eWallets through Google Pay.
