The government officially launched the Pangkalan Data Utama (PADU) socio-economic database at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made the announcement today, marking a significant step in utilising integrated national socio-economic data.
Ensuring Data Security and Compliance: PADU’s Role in Government Efficiency and Economic Precision
PADU consolidates data from various government departments and agencies, excluding banking data due to legal restrictions. Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli highlighted the exception, emphasising compliance with the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (BAFIA).
In the short term, PADU will play a crucial role in the government’s subsidy and assistance retargeting efforts. Household net disposable income metrics will offer a fair socio-economic snapshot for every Malaysian household. This approach sets the stage for the targeted subsidy of RON 95 petrol in the latter part of 2024, with plans for electricity subsidies as well.
Elevating Subsidy Strategies: PADU’s Impact on Fair Socio-Economic Determinations
The database’s introduction signifies a transition from the B40-M40-T20 approach to a more targeted and equitable aid recipient determination method. Managed by the statistics department, PADU serves as a secure and near real-time digital national database for 32 million Malaysians.
While the database presently integrates data on 29.8 million individuals from birth to death, Malaysians are encouraged to register on PADU. Updating information on 39 variables ensures data accuracy. Although registration is optional, failure to update may impact eligibility for targeted subsidies. The government has set a deadline of March 31 for individuals to complete this process, providing both online and offline registration options.
Highlighting the robust cybersecurity protocols of the database, it guarantees compliance with prevailing laws governing its data usage. It firmly asserts that personal data owned by government entities will remain unaltered. In essence, the introduction of PADU seeks to improve government efficiency, streamline subsidy determination, and contribute to various economic aspects through the utilization of current socio-economic data.
