GTA VI Might Cost More Than RM400
GTA VI is the highly anticipated successor to 2013’s GTA V. It is set to redefine open-world gaming. Additionally, it is expected to shatter existing price points for video games.
Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to launch with a price tag between USD80 and USD100, according to Epyllion CEO Matthew Ball. (yes, this is the same person who revealed that PC games outsold console games for the first time in forever.) This translates to a hefty RM447 or more. Moreover, this price hike aligns with the industry trend of rising game costs. For example, many popular titles now debut at USD70, or approximately RM313.
Even though gamers might not be happy about the higher price, Ball says a USD70 GTA 6 would actually be the cheapest one ever, if you look at what older games cost when adjusted for inflation. He thinks a fair price would be closer to USD91.
“GTA 6 could re-establish packed video game prices after decades of deflation (despite rampant cost growth),” Ball said in the report.
A USD 100 price tag for Grand Theft Auto VI could set a precedent for the industry. This may lead to further price increases across other games. If this happens, it could affect the overall pricing structure in the gaming world. Games currently priced at USD50, USD60, and USD70 could see their launch prices rise to USD60, USD70, and USD80 respectively.
GTA VI is rumoured to have a timed exclusivity period on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. As a result, this has further added to the growing anticipation. Moreover, it could help justify the higher price point.
With such a steep price, the question remains: Will gamers be willing to pay nearly RM450 for a single video game?
