PC Gaming Overtakes Consoles, Industry Report Finds

A new report from Epyllion, an investment strategy firm, reveals a significant shift in the gaming landscape: PC gaming is now outselling consoles. This “bright spot” of continued growth stands in contrast to the overall gaming industry, which has seen revenue growth stagnate in recent years.

PC Gaming Takes the Lead

The report, “The State of Video Gaming in 2025,” analyses data from leading market research firms. While both PC and console gaming have experienced substantial growth since 2011, console sales have slowed considerably in recent years. In contrast, PC gaming revenue has surged, driven by factors such as:

  • Larger and more accessible game libraries: PC gamers enjoy access to a wider range of titles, including many console exclusives, with greater backward compatibility.
  • Enhanced connectivity: PCs offer seamless integration with web browsers, social media, and streaming platforms.
  • Superior performance: High-end PCs deliver unmatched gaming experiences.
  • Growing popularity of portable PC gaming: Devices like Steam Deck are expanding the reach of PC gaming.
  • The rise of Roblox: Millions of children who grew up playing Roblox are less likely to prioritise console purchases.

While some market research firms report slightly different figures, Epyllion’s analysis, which draws heavily on data from IDG, suggests that PC gaming now generates more revenue than console gaming.

Matthew Ball, CEO of Epyllion, emphasised the continued growth potential of PC gaming, particularly with the expansion of platforms like Steam into the living room and handheld devices.

This shift in the gaming landscape has significant implications for developers, publishers, and hardware manufacturers. As PC gaming continues to dominate, we can expect to see increased investment in PC-centric titles and technologies.
