How to choose 13th Gen Intel® Core™ Mobile Processor and Intel® Arc™

Choosing a 13th Gen Intel® Core™ Mobile Processor can be daunting. However, there are certain queues that you can look out for to better find a processor that is suitable for your needs. Mr Louis, the Intel Master Trainer has once again given his thoughts on how it’s best to choose Intel® Processors (along with Intel® Arc™) for the everyday man.

What is the easiest way to find a processor that is suitable for your use case?

There are 4 main tiers that you should look out for which is the Intel® Core™ i3,i5,i7 and i9 if you don’t want to dive in too deep.

The Intel® Core™ i3 would be for the user that has really basic needs like a student. This would be tasks like web browsing, email, watching videos, and productivity applications like Powerpoint and Word.

The Intel® Core™ i5 would be for those who would need a little bit more performance in tackling tasks like light photo and video editing, running multiple applications or even some casual gaming.

The Intel® Core™ i7 is for the professionals that would like to use their laptop for heavy workloads like heavy video editing, 3D modelling and high end gaming.

Lastly would be the Intel® Core™ i9 which is for the powerhouse user. The best of the best performance in a mobile package will be under this tier.

What if you want to dive a little bit deeper? What should you be looking out for?

For desktop CPUs, there may be a K or F designation at the end of the model name. For example the Intel® Core™ i7-13700K and i7-13700KF. K will designate that the chip is overclockable while the F will let you know there is no on-board graphics on the processor, so an external GPU will be needed to display on screen.

For mobile, there are 5 main subcategories which are HX, HK, H,  P and U processors that will be designated at the end of the processor such as i9-13980HX or i7-1365U. To simplify, HX, HK and H processors are meant for gaming where:

H-series: Gives enthusiast-level gaming performance.

HK-series: Caters more towards high-end gaming performance with overclocking capability.

HX-series: Workstation-caliber performance for professional gamers.

P-series are meant for thinner and lighter laptops, while U-series are for ultralight and foldable laptops. They will typically focus more on power efficiency and giving more battery life.

What are P and E cores that you can find in Intel 13th Generation processors?

P-cores or performance cores are for the heavy hitting tasks such as gaming. With P-cores, it’s about giving the best performance to you but the downside is this will eat up much more power to give you the performance, thus lowering the battery life in laptops faster in exchange for performance.

On the other hand, E-cores or efficiency cores are all about saving battery life. These are the most efficient cores where they will take up all the lighter tasks such as background processing so that the P cores don’t have to do them, and save power.

In essence, this means that the mix of P-cores and E-cores in an Intel processor is all about balancing performance while still giving you good energy efficiency and battery life for mobile devices.

What is Intel Arc in the most simplified way?

Intel® Arc™ is Intel’s very own graphics solution. There is Intel® Arc™ 3 for enhanced gaming, Intel® Arc™ 5 for Advanced Gaming and Intel® Arc™ 7 is for high performance gaming.

In general, Intel® Arc™ 3 is for casual/esport gamers who want to have smooth gameplay in games such as Valorant, and play at a smooth frame rate in low to medium settings.

Intel® Arc™ 5 is for the more serious gamer that would like to take it one step up, maybe in terms of playing esports titles at higher settings.

Intel® Arc™ 7 is for more hardcore gamers who would like to play AAA titles at playable frame rates.
