Report: Apple Indefinitely Delays iPhone Air 2 Following Weak Sales
Apple has reportedly pulled the second-generation “iPhone Air” from its release schedule indefinitely, marking a rare and significant shift in the tech giant’s product roadmap.
According to a report by The Information, citing sources involved in the project, Apple has notified engineers and suppliers that the iPhone Air 2, originally slated for release next fall, currently has no new launch date. While the project has not been officially cancelled, the move to take a flagship device completely off the schedule is described as “rare if not unprecedented.”
Disappointing Sales Drive Strategy Shift

The decision appears to be driven directly by the market performance of the original iPhone Air. Sources indicate that sales of the first-generation ultra-thin device have been lower than expected, prompting Apple to reevaluate the viability of a successor in the near term.
The pullback is already affecting Apple’s supply chain. Manufacturing partner Luxshare reportedly ended its production of the current iPhone Air in late October. Meanwhile, Foxconn is said to be dismantling the majority of its production lines for the device and is expected to halt all production by the end of this month.
What Was Planned
Before the delay, the iPhone Air 2 was expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in late 2026. The second-generation model was rumoured to feature significant upgrades, including:
- An even lighter chassis than its predecessor.
- A larger battery capacity to address battery life concerns.
- A vapour chamber cooling system, a technology first introduced in the iPhone 17 Pro.
- A potential dual-camera system, upgrading from the single-lens design of the first Air.
Future Lineup Implications
With the iPhone Air 2 now in limbo, we should expect Apple’s fall 2026 lineup to focus on three primary devices: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the highly anticipated “iPhone Fold.”
However, the iPhone Air concept may not be dead forever. The report notes that some engineers are still working on the project, and there remains a possibility that a significantly redesigned version could resurface as early as spring 2027, potentially launching alongside a base model iPhone 18 and a budget-friendly iPhone 18e.
