Microsoft Speeds Up Development Of Next-Gen Xbox, Prioritises Game Preservation

Internal emails obtained by Windows Central and verified by Microsoft reveal a two-pronged approach at Xbox. The company is reportedly moving full speed ahead on their next-gen Xbox console. Their aim is to deliver a groundbreaking leap in gaming technology. Additionally, Xbox is establishing a dedicated game preservation team, showcasing a commitment to safeguarding its gaming heritage.

Next-Gen Xbox on the Fast Track

“We are moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware, focused on delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation,” declared Xbox president Sarah Bond in the email, reiterating comments made earlier this year when the console’s existence was officially confirmed. While specifics regarding the hardware and release date remain under wraps, leaked documents in 2023 hinted at a potential 2028 launch window. With Microsoft seemingly prioritizing development, an earlier release date wouldn’t be entirely out of the question.

Looking beyond the next generation, Xbox is demonstrating a dedication to preserving its extensive gaming library. “We have formed a new team dedicated to game preservation, important to all of us at Xbox and the industry itself,” Bond continued in the email. “We are building on our strong history of delivering backwards compatibility to our players, and we remain committed to bringing forward the amazing library of Xbox games for future generations of players to enjoy.”

Preserving classic titles is crucial. Ironically, the current generation of games may be most at risk. The rise of online features and digital formats presents a unique challenge. For example, live service games often become unplayable without an internet connection. When servers are inevitably shut down, these games disappear entirely. Additionally, microtransactions, increasingly prevalent even in single-player titles, can force online connectivity, potentially rendering them unplayable in the future.

Microsoft’s focus on game preservation is commendable. The gaming industry faces challenges with digital storefront closures and discontinued online services. Xbox is taking proactive steps by establishing a dedicated team. They aim to ensure accessibility to their extensive game library for future generations. This commitment extends beyond just Xbox titles; it’s a significant step towards safeguarding gaming history as a whole.
