NEW 2022 Samsung Galaxy A Series: A33, A53 & A73 | A Quick Hands-On!

So Samsung has just unveiled their new midrange A series and I got a couple of hours of quick hands-on experience on it, which is the Samsung Galaxy A33, the A53, and the A73, so let’s see what you can expect and how each of these smartphones differ from each other.

0.2 A33
0.3 A53
0.4 A73

Design & Build

First, looking at the design and the build of the phones, you will find the overall design to look very identical to last year’s A Series and of course very reminiscent of the S21 FE series as well.

Samsung’s approach on this design is: Why change something which is NOT broken, right? Because yes, I still stand by what I said in my review of the S21 FE and also the A72 that I loved the overall design, especially the matte plastic finish that the smartphone had.

In terms of the color options, you will find similar “awesome” colors like last year and some new introductions as well, where the A33 that I got my hands on was in Awesome Black, the A53 that I had was in Awesome Peach and the A73 was in my favorite color of all, which of course is the Awesome White.

Now I did try and see if there was any change for the camera bump and see if it wobbled if I typed it on a surface. And the good news is that all of the 3 variants did not wobble at all, so that was nice to know.

Then looking at the ports and buttons, while all 3 had similar placements for the volume rocker and the power button, which was on the right.

There was only a slight difference on where the SIM ejector slot was, where it was placed on top of for the A33 and the A73 compared to it being placed at the bottom for the A53, together with the usual USB-C port and the speaker grill.

And another great news is that all 3 phones have a dedicated MicroSD card slot that can support up to 1TB of external storage.

And because all 3 phones had IP67 dust and water-resistant rating, which a lot of other smartphones within this segment has, I’d obviously give the phone an A for the phone’s build and the overall design because as mentioned, I really did like the previous designs that all of the A Series and the S21 FE had, so naturally, I loved this as well.

Display

As for the phones displays, here is where it is a more prominent differentiating factor for all of the phones:

The A33 has the smallest screen out of three, with a screen size of 6.4-inches with the Infinity-U camera cut in front

The A53 has a slightly bigger screen of 6.5-inches with the Infinity-O camera punch-hole

The A73 has a 6.7-inch display with the Infinity-O camera punch-hole

While all of the 3 phones sport a Super AMOLED display, with the in-display fingerprint sensor and up to 800 nits of brightness, the A33 has a maximum refresh rate of up to 90Hz, whereas the other two has a refresh rate up to 120Hz.

And based on my first impressions, looking at the screen when playing videos and just scrolling around the phone was great since it has a Super AMOLED screen for all of the phones, especially with the same FHD+ resolution on all of the three phones.

So with this, since the display quality has always been the best for any Samsung device, even though it is a mid-range smartphone, I would give the phone screens an A as well because of its great color accuracy and consistent quality on all of these 3 smartphones.

Cameras

Now in terms of the cameras:

The A33 comes with:

  • a 48-megapixel main camera,
  • an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens,
  • a 2-megapixel depth camera
  • and a 5-megapixel macro lens.

Then the A53 comes with:

  • a 64-megapixel main camera,
  • a 12-megapixel ultra wide lens,
  • a 5-megapixel depth lens
  • and a 5-megapixel macro lens

And what’s very interesting is the fact that the A73 comes with:

  • a massive 108-megapixel main camera,
  • a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens,
  • a 5-megapixel depth lens
  • and 5-megapixel macro lens.

Then the front camera on the A33 is a 13-megapixel lens, where else the A53 and the A73 comes with a 32-megapixel lens instead.

And based on my quick test shots specifically on the A73,  the rear cameras were really great and so was the front camera portrait mode as well.

What’s nice is that ALL of the 3 models has Optical Image Stabilization for the camera lens, and looking from the camera’s software’s perspective, it also has Single Take, the advanced portrait mode like changing the background effect and many other software features like the Photo Editor, Photo Remaster and the Object Eraser.

And of course, I am planning to test the cameras out further when I get my hands on a review unit, so do let me know if you would like to see that, and do if you haven’t done so.

As for video recording, both phones can record up to 4K UHD 30 frames per second for all of the phones, which is super nice to know because some so-called “flagship” smartphones don’t even have 4K video recording for the front cameras, up until now… *cough* Xiaomi *cough*

Specs

Next, looking at the other specs of the phones, the A33, and the A53 comes with the Exynos 1280 chipset, and the A73 ships with the Snapdragon 778G Chipset.

The A33 comes with a RAM and storage configuration of 8 gigabytes of RAM with 128 gigabytes of storage, and the A53 and the A73 comes with a bigger 256 gigabytes of storage. And speaking of RAM, there is the RAM Plus or the virtual ram option that uses the extra storage from the phone to give a virtual ram boost of either 2, 4, or 6 gigabytes of RAM.

In terms of battery, all phones have 5000 mAh of battery with 25 watts fast charging, where the charger does NOT come inside of the box, so keep that in mind, and yes, as usual, I shall see how much battery life I can get when using each phone daily.

Then what’s extra sweet is that all of the three phones come with OneUI version 4.1 on top of Android 12 with 3 confirmed Android updates and 4 security updates.

Going further into other software features, other than the really amazing OneUI version 4.1, you will find all three of the smartphones to have similar flagship software perks like Link to Windows to have a seamless transition between your phone and your PC, the first time on an A series smartphone.

Then there are the very useful Bixby routines, with their amazing If This Then That or IFTTT functions. Continue Apps, Buds Auto-Switching, Samsung Pay, and Smart Things as well.
