Pixel 9 Series Gains AirDrop Support via Quick Share Update

Pixel 9 Series Gets AirDrop Support; Pixel 9a Left Behind

TL;DR: Google has rolled out AirDrop interoperability to the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL via a Quick Share update. The feature allows direct file sharing with Apple devices, but is currently not available on the Pixel 9a.

Hot on the heels of the new Pixel 10a dropping, Google has rolled out a surprise update for the Pixel 9 series that bridges the gap between Android and iOS earlier than expected.

The update, which began pushing to devices this morning, allows users of the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL to share files directly with iPhone, iPad, and Mac users via Quick Share. However, the budget-friendly Pixel 9a has notably been excluded from this initial rollout.

Bridging the Ecosystem Divide

This update follows Google’s recent confirmation that it would expand AirDrop compatibility beyond the Pixel 10 series in 2026. While the feature debuted as a Pixel 10 exclusive, its arrival on the previous generation Pixel 9 flagship line signals Google’s commitment to aggressively dismantling ecosystem barriers.

Users can now see “AirDrop” compatible devices directly within the standard Quick Share sheet. The protocol translation layer, which Google previously moved to a Play Store module, handles the handshake between Android’s Quick Share and Apple’s AirDrop, making cross-platform transfers seamless.

Why Not the Pixel 9a?

The exclusion of the Pixel 9a has sparked discussion among users. While Google has not issued an official reason, industry analysts speculate it could be due to hardware limitations in the older Bluetooth/UWB stack used in the ‘a-series’ device, or simply a strategic decision to reserve premium connectivity features for flagship tiers.

How to Get the Feature

To get AirDrop functionality, ensure your phone has the latest Google Play System update and update the Quick Share Extension to version v1.0.815689706 or higher.

Enable “Everyone for 10 minutes” in both Quick Share settings on the Pixel and AirDrop on the iOS device to transfer files directly.
