The Samsung Galaxy S24, boasts an impressive new feature that’s sure to delight photography enthusiasts: the ability to colourise black and white photos with the help of AI
Introduce some colour with the Samsung Galaxy S24
This feature was first brought to light by famed tipster, Ice Universe, over on his Twitter/X profile. Colourising black and white pictures isn’t an entirely new territory though – Google Photos introduced a similar feature back in 2018. However, the S24 takes things a step further by offering on-device colourisation, meaning you don’t need to rely on an internet connection or cloud processing.
So, how does it work? The Galaxy S24’s AI analyses the black and white photo, searching for clues about the original colours. It examines factors like shading, texture, and composition to make educated guesses about what hues might have been present. While the process isn’t perfect, it’s surprisingly accurate, especially for simpler scenes.
To use the colourisation feature, simply open a black and white photo in your Samsung Gallery app and tap the “Colorize” button. Within 10 seconds, the AI will work its magic, transforming your monochrome memories into vibrant snapshots.
We tried it out ourselves using the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the results were pretty impressive though not entirely accurate. Some colours were incredibly washed out or downright wrong. At times the colourised pictures looked like it was ripped straight out of a CCTV still. Here are some of the black and white pictures we took next to their colourised versions.
With that said, this is just a colourised black and white picture so if you want something prettier just take pictures with the phone’s actual camera. It is still an impressive feature to have in spite of its inaccuracies.
The S24’s AI prowess doesn’t stop there. The phone also includes a “Remove Mirror Reflection” feature, which can be handy for eliminating unwanted reflections in photos taken with mirrors. This feature is especially useful for selfies and portraits, where mirror reflections can often detract from the overall composition.
