So in the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Watch5 and the Watch5 Pro, together with the Galaxy Buds2 Pro and the Galaxy Z Flip4, but in this video, I will be giving you my hands-on experience with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4!
Build Quality
Let’s start with the Galaxy Z Fold4; the overall design and build were very similar to the previous iteration, but the main difference is when you actually hold the device itself, as it felt way lighter at about 11 grams lighter, and it has a slightly thinner form factor too.
While the weight and dimensions seem minor on paper, BUT if you hold the device, you will feel the difference indeed.
As for the color options, it is available in Phantom Black, as you can see over here, and then it is also available in Gray Green and the unique Beige color as well.
Other than that, you are getting a similar solid armor aluminum build, with a tougher drop and scratch resistance as how the Galaxy Z Fold3 was with the folding and unfolding mechanism, which can stand up to 200,000 times, with its high-quality UTG or Ultra Thin Glass.
Now the phone has a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection, which is slightly better than the Gorilla Glass Victus on the Z Fold3, but you will also find that the camera array design is similar but with upgraded camera lenses, which I will go into the specs a little later.
Then Samsung still maintains its IPX8 Dust and Water Resistant rating, which is something that other Foldables smartphones lack.
The ports and buttons placements have not changed, so you will find similar placements for them, and since it is following the similar build of the previous version, it doesn’t close flat.
Display
So the displays are where you would see a significant improvement as the 6.2-inch cover screen now fills up more to give it a more uniformed bezel over this cover screen but with the similar Dynamic AMOLED 2X and 120Hz refresh rate.
And while the unfolded screen has a similar 7.6-inch Foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, a 120Hz refresh rate, and the same 1200 nits peak brightness, BUT the screen-to-body ratio has increased compared to the Z Fold3.
Cameras
What’s sweet is that the cameras have been heavily improved this time around, where there is:
- a huge 50 MP, f/1.8 for the main lens
- a 12 MP, f/2.2 Ultrawide lens
- and a 12 MP, f/2.4 Telephoto lens
Then the cover screen’s front camera is a similar 10 MP, f/2.2 and the under-display camera also has the same 4 MP, f/1.8 but an improved software processing which I am definitely looking forward to testing this and all of the camera’s performance during my full review of the phone, once I get my hands on it later.
Then since the rear cameras have upgraded to the higher megapixel count, it can record up to 8k 24 frames per second, and the under-display camera can record up to the front cover screen can record up to 1080p 60 frames per second, and the Cover selfie camera records up to 4k 60 frames per second.
Other Specs
So being a new phone in the block, it has the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 4 nm chipset, with 12GB of RAM with the virtual RAM plus expansion, with a storage configuration up to 1TB.
As usual, it comes with the latest and greatest One UI 4.1.1 skin based on Android 12, with new software enhancements like the new taskbar to give that almost desktop-like experience for your favorite and frequently used apps.
Besides all of the great flex mode software features, there is better large screen optimization for apps like Microsoft Office, Google Meet, and more, and there is also compatibility with the S Pen and S Pen Pro with some AI software enhancements specifically for the Z Fold4.
As for the battery, it has a 4400 mAh battery, with similar Fast charging up to 25W, Fast wireless charging at 11W, and reverse wireless charging at 4.5W. And since it is a foldable smartphone, the battery is divided into two parts of the phone to streamline the charging performance.
