“DeepSar” is Sarawak’s AI Model Currently in Development
Sarawak’s Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has announced plans to develop a proprietary Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) named “DeepSar.” Specifically, this AI model focuses on integrating diverse local data. This approach helps facilitate global sharing. Ultimately, it aims to promote Sarawak’s unique cultural and environmental assets.
Abang Johari, inspired by China’s Liang Wenfeng, the founder of the AI model DeepSeek, envisions DeepSar as a tool to improve digital conversations. Consequently, this initiative aims to enhance communication between Sarawakians and the global community. He stated, “I hope that one day we will have DeepSar developed by the people of Sarawak, with unique content about Sarawak, facilitating digital conversations between Sarawakians and the world.”
The Sarawak government is also promoting microchip design development, recognising microchips as essential components in data transmission. Abang Johari emphasised, “Data can only be transmitted through chips; chips are like the blood in our bodies, and they drive you.”
To support this initiative, the state-owned ICT solutions provider, SAINS Sdn Bhd, has been tasked with collecting relevant data. As a global hub for rainforests and biodiversity, Sarawak aims to share information internationally, creating new economic opportunities. Abang Johari noted, “We can share insights with the world about the bioresource economy. When this information is downloaded, it is not free. Eight billion people can access that information, and we also need to obtain patents and rights to our bioresources.”
Additionally, Abang Johari commended the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) for collaborating with other agencies to enhance the state’s telecommunications infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of this infrastructure for advancing Sarawak’s economic and social agendas.
These initiatives reflect Sarawak’s commitment to leveraging technology and AI to promote its unique resources and foster economic growth.
