Sonos and IKEA End “Symfonisk” Speaker Line
In a development that may surprise many home audio fans, Sonos has confirmed the conclusion of its multi-year collaboration with furniture giant IKEA on the popular “Symfonisk” range of speakers.
A Sonos spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that IKEA is globally phasing out its current inventory of Symfonisk lamp speakers, bookshelf speakers, and picture frame speakers. Sonos has stated that there are no plans for future devices under the joint venture.
Continued Support for Existing Devices
Despite the end of the partnership for new product development, Sonos assures customers that existing Symfonisk devices will continue to receive software updates. Sonos spokesperson Erin Pategas emphasised this commitment, stating, “Although our work together has largely wound down and we won’t be releasing new products as partners, we’ll continue to support every existing Symfonisk product so customers can keep enjoying great sound in their homes for many years to come.”
Consumers have responded positively to the Symfonisk products, which fully integrate with Sonos’ whole-home audio ecosystem and often cost less than Sonos’ standalone speakers. The range has proven particularly popular as affordable wireless surround sound options for Sonos soundbars, and the unique designs of the lamp and picture frame speakers have allowed for more discreet audio integration into home decor. Many consider the bookshelf speaker a strong performer in its price range, often comparing it favourably to earlier Sonos models.
The announcement comes as Sonos prepares to release its latest quarterly earnings report on Wednesday. Analysts will be keenly observing the report for insights into the potential impact of US tariffs on the company’s business. Sonos recently lowered the prices of its Era 100 speaker and Ray soundbar in an effort to boost demand and has acknowledged its close monitoring of tariff developments.
Sonos Refocuses on Core Audio Business
The end of the IKEA collaboration appears to align with a broader strategic refocus for Sonos. Earlier this year, the company reportedly cancelled its long-awaited video player project, signalling a renewed commitment to its core audio product line. Interim CEO Tom Conrad has also highlighted the company’s top priority as improving its mobile software following a problematic app overhaul last year.
The news urges consumers to act quickly and secure the remaining Symfonisk speaker inventory at their local IKEA stores before it’s phased out. Sonos and IKEA have ended their collaboration on new audio innovations, although they will continue to support existing devices.
