Sony in Line to Purchase Kadokawa
Sony Group Corporation is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire Kadokawa Corporation. This move could significantly bolster Sony’s gaming division, particularly with the potential acquisition of FromSoftware, the acclaimed studio behind titles like Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne.
Kadokawa, a major Japanese media conglomerate, has a diverse portfolio that aligns well with Sony’s existing entertainment businesses. The company is a prominent publisher of anime, manga, and light novels, and owns several renowned game development studios, including Spike Chunsoft, Acquire, and Gotcha Gotcha Games. Fun fact: the company also owns Malaysia’s very own Gempak Starz, which was purchased in 2015.
While Sony has yet to confirm the deal, the potential acquisition of Kadokawa could have far-reaching implications for the gaming industry. FromSoftware, in particular, has garnered immense critical acclaim and commercial success with its recent releases.
