Late last year, there were many reports that pointed towards Qualcomm and Asus working together to produce Qualcomm branded gaming phones. At the time, there was no confirmation from Asus or Qualcomm that this was happening but the phone in question seems to have now surfaced online.
The TENAA, China’s regulatory body have posted images that show a Snapdragon powered Asus phone according to XDA Developers. The images show a phone with an Asus logo at the bottom of the back cover and the Snapdragon logo and name in the centre of the device. The phone also seems to pack a rear fingerprint scanner but the filing report seems to state that the phone will pack an in-display fingerprint scanner.
The filing also goes on to list a few specs of the phone which include a 6.78-inch OLED display, a 2.84GHz octa-core processor which could be the Snapdragon 888, a 3840 mAh battery, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. In terms of camera specs, the filing lists a 64MP main sensor and a 12MP front facing camera with no word on other cameras. There also seems to be a 3.5mm headphone jack onboard. These specs seem very similar to the regular Zenfone 8 which makes this an interesting listing as it could just be a rebranded Zenfone 8 as well.
The listing also adds the model number, Asus_I007D which XDA states matches device code-named VODKA that was referenced in the ROG Phone 5‘s firmware. VODKA wasn’t the only device code-name spotted at the time, as the outlet says two devices dubbed SAKE and PICASSO were spotted too. However, the website says the latter two devices launched as the Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip.
It will be interesting to see what a phone like this could turn out to be and if it is set to be a reality, it should be happening sooner rather than later.
