Transformers One Review: The Movie to Light the Franchise’s Darkest Hour

Transformers One Review: A Fresh Take on the Franchise with Surprising Depth

The Transformers franchise has had its fair share of highs and lows, but Transformers One brings something fresh to the table with a dive into the origins of the iconic characters on Cybertron. Fans of the comics and games may already be familiar with the planet and its politics, but this animated film introduces it to new audiences in a visually stunning and emotionally charged way.

More Than Meets The Eye

Transformers One Orion Pax and D-16

When the promotional trailers for Transformers One dropped, the comedic tone raised eyebrows. To be perfectly frank, even I, a die-hard Transformers fan who actually likes the Bay films (don’t hit me, please) was a little sceptical and somewhat worried when I first watched it. Was this a kid-centric film trying too hard to cater to younger audiences? Well, thankfully it’s a little bit of yes and no. The first half of the movie is lighthearted and packed with humour—some of it lands, especially for younger viewers, but for adults, it might come off as a little forced. Thankfully, Transformers One shifts gears midway, delivering a more serious tone that builds up to an intense and satisfying finale.

While the humour may not always hit the mark, it’s a far cry from the cringeworthy and crass gags of the Michael Bay movies. The jokes are much cleaner and more appropriate for the film’s intended audience. However, what really stands out is how the second half of the movie redeems itself by delving into deeper themes and bringing out strong character development. The climax, packed with action and tension, is where Transformers One truly shines.

Complex Themes Beneath the Surface

One of the most surprising aspects of Transformers One is the mature undertones woven into the story. The movie subtly explores classism, with Cog-less Transformers being treated as second-class citizens compared to those with the ability to transform. This division catalyses the rise of rebellion and radicalism, adding layers of depth to what could have easily been a straightforward action film. These themes may go over the heads of younger viewers, but for adults, they add a thought-provoking element to the movie.

Stellar Voice Acting and Character Arcs

The voice acting is another highlight of the film. Chris Hemsworth delivers a standout performance as Orion Pax, who eventually becomes Optimus Prime. Hemsworth captures the gravitas of the character, channelling the spirit of Peter Cullen, the original voice of Optimus. His transformation throughout the movie is both subtle and powerful, making him a worthy successor to Cullen’s legacy.

Transformers One D-16

Brian Tyree Henry also impresses as D-16, the character who eventually transforms into the infamous Megatron. Initially, his performance feels too lighthearted, but as his character’s arc darkens, Henry skillfully brings out a more menacing tone. The relationship between Orion Pax and D-16 forms the film’s emotional crux, turning their tragic fallout into one of the movie’s most compelling aspects.

Other notable performances include Keegan-Michael Key as the playful Bumblebee, who mostly serves as comic relief, and Scarlett Johansson as the steadfast Elita. Long-time fans will also appreciate the various Easter eggs and cameos sprinkled throughout the movie. Also, if you’re a fan of Keegan-Michael Key’s Key & Peele sketch comedy series, there is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference that is sure to leave you laughing out loud. I know I did when that Easter egg dropped. Jon Hamm and Laurence Fishburne also turned out great performances as Sentinel Prime and Alpha Trion respectively. Fishburne’s voice in particular exudes such a wise and commanding tone which is perfect for the elder Transformer.

A Visual Spectacle

Visually, Transformers One is breathtaking, thanks to Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). The animation, especially during the transforming sequences and action set pieces, is a true marvel (get it, Transformers fans?). The attention to detail in the character designs, particularly as Orion Pax and D-16 evolve into Optimus Prime and Megatron, is a testament to ILM’s dedication to the franchise.

Should You Watch It?

Transformers One Main Cast

Transformers One is surprisingly good and isn’t just a movie for kids or die-hard Transformers fans. While the first half may feel overly lighthearted for some, the second half more than makes up for it with deeper themes, well-developed characters, and a thrilling climax. If you’re a fan of visually stunning animation, complex character arcs, and a good dose of nostalgia, this movie is worth a watch.

The movie also manages to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Transformers franchise in a meaningful way. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the series, Transformers One offers something for everyone.

And if you’re a fan of post-credits scenes, you’ll be happy to know there are two that tease potential future developments. So, don’t leave your seat too early!

Overall

Transformers One Optimus Prime

Transformers One revitalises the franchise with a fresh, engaging look at Cybertron’s early days, focusing on the origins of iconic characters like Optimus Prime and Megatron. By exploring their beginnings, the film offers a compelling origin story that blends familiar elements with new insights, breathing life into a series that has long fascinated fans.

The film strikes a balance between action-packed fun and thoughtful storytelling. The first half leans into humour and character setup, appealing to younger viewers, but the second half shifts to more mature themes like classism, rebellion, and loyalty. This tonal shift bridges the gap between generations, offering something for both longtime fans and newcomers.
