XDefiant Gets the Axe from Developer Ubisoft

Ubisoft Pulls the Plug on XDefiant

In a surprising move, Ubisoft has announced that it will be shutting down its free-to-play FPS game, XDefiant. The game, which launched in May 2024, will be officially sunset on June 3, 2025.

According to reports from Insider Gaming, the decision to shut down XDefiant was primarily due to low player numbers. Additionally, insufficient spending by players played a significant role in the closure. This news was later confirmed by Mark Rubin, Executive Producer of XDefiant, in a post on X.

“I am unfortunately here today to announce that XDefiant will be shutting down,” Rubin wrote. “Starting today (December 3, 2024), new downloads and player registrations will no longer be available. We will still release our Season 3 content in the near future (exact date TBD) and the servers will remain active until June 3, 2025.”

While the game’s Season 3 content will still be released, a skeleton crew will be maintained to keep the servers running until the final shutdown date. Additionally, Ubisoft has confirmed that players will receive refunds for cosmetic items and other purchases at a later date.

XDefiant’s closure marks another disappointment for Ubisoft, which has faced a series of setbacks in recent years. The game was positioned as a competitor to popular titles like Call of Duty and Overwatch 2, but it failed to gain significant traction.
