1 Month with HUAWEI P60 Pro: Unmatched Camera Excellence! 😲

So, when the HUAWEI P60 Pro was launched, they claimed that it was the best low-light telephoto camera in the market.

Now, that is quite a bold claim, but fast forward to today, and guess what? The P60 Pro currently sits at the NUMBER ONE spot in DXOMARK’s smartphone ranking.

So is this the new king or queen of photography? Well, let’s find out.

I did a first-look video of this phone when I was in China, so if you missed it, you can check it out here: https://youtu.be/Qycafs3lILY

To recap the camera specs, the HUAWEI P60 Pro comes with a triple camera array at the back: a 48-megapixel Ultra lighting main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 48-megapixel Ultra Lighting Telephone lens. Then the front is a 13-megapixel selfie lens.

So, in this review, I will prioritize on the two Ultra Lighting cameras, the main and the telephoto lens, which there is a lot to talk about, so let’s get to it!

Main Camera

Now the main highlight of the main camera system, in case you did not know, is the physical apertureThis means that there is a physical aperture that manually opens or closes to bring in more, or less light into the lens to get that sweet natural bokeh in your shots.

This goes from an aperture of F1.4-F4.0, which is auto-adjustable and, according to HUAWEI, the largest used in the industry.

Couple that with an improved RYYB SuperSensing sensor and a high transmittance Lens Group; this camera really pulls ahead from its competition both in terms of photo and video, especially in low light.

And check out these night shots I have taken; they are absolutely gorgeous. And one could not even believe that it was taken on a smartphone.

In landscape photography, the results are breathtaking. Then in the camera app, the AI automatically detects specific scenes like sunrise and sunset, so with that, you can take pictures easily and effortlessly.

And it also means that you can take night cityscape images and choose more such as the Light Painting for traffic trails and even create your very own astrophotography.

Now remember the physical aperture I was talking about earlier? Well, it is definitely great to really make your subject pop out from the picture.

However, compared to other smartphone cameras, when it comes to having multiple people in a shot at different distances from the camera, where you want everyone to be sharply captured. This is where the HUAWEI P60 Pro’s magic comes in, where the phone will automatically capture the picture using the best aperture to get the best available shots.

Now, this is because even though it has a physical aperture, it does not mean that you have to always physically change it every time because the P60 Pro does it automatically for you.

Telephoto

Okay, that is for the main camera but how is it different from the telephoto lens then? Well, telephoto lenses used to be for more of zoomed-in shots which is handy, for say, animal photography, where you won’t want to disturb any animal up close, or get bitten, or get stuck, or get eaten… Well, this telephoto lens is way better when it comes to the portrait shots, especially in low light situations where this is definitely a star in taking those photos.

Speaking of stars, it is a great smartphone to take in a concert-like environment in case you are going for Coldplay and you have a very horrible seat very far away from the stage.

Besides taking the far-away shots as mentioned, this telephoto lens lets in 178% more light than the previous generation, so it works for both long-distance zoom and also macro shots, which is definitely a very flexible and also a very creative way, so you can take more versatile shots, thanks to the Long Travel Slide Zoom Lens Group.

Now, textures are also brought to life with the improved XD Fusion Pro with the Texture Engine.

And the second last thing that I really want to talk about is the Super Moon mode with XMAGE. Well, previously you can only take a picture of the moon and that’s it, well that is a one-trick pony kind of thing, maybe you can do it once or maybe twice, and you can even forget those kinds of shots exist. Well now, you can take this kind of shot where you can shoot the moon and also its scenery that produces one of the best nighttime images.

Lastly is the camera software experience, which has been improved so much, whether or not you are a newbie or a professional, it caters for both parties as well. The quick menu is super easy to use, and the camera zoom ring gives you that smooth transition between different distances.

And of course, the video quality on this, both for the rear and the front camera, is really amazing with great image stabilization (sample video footage on my YouTube video).

And speaking of the front camera, the HUAWEI P60 Pro joins the other flagships of the HUAWEI devices that has the 4K front recording compared to other Chinese smartphone makers.

Finish

So besides this great smartphone camera, another thing that is very nice at the back is of course the beautiful Rococo Pearl finish.

Now, if you have been following me for a while, you know that I’m a sucker for really nice white color smartphones but this my friends, is truly amazing because every phone has this amazing sheen in design that is unique to each individual phone, so no two phones are exactly the same because you are the owner.

However, if you find it a bit flashy for your taste, it also comes with another finish which is a very nice understated sandy matte black that is anti-fingerprint and also looks classically handsome.

Kunlun Glass

All right, let’s take a look at the screen because it uses the quad-curve display that is more rounded and gently moves around the edges to make the screen not only more immersive and beautiful but also gives you a very comfortable grip, especially if you’re using the phone in landscape orientation for watching videos or even gaming as well.

Now, it is protected by HUAWEI’s own Kunlun Glass, which is said to be 10 times more durable than regular glass, where it’s even given Switzerland’s SGS 5-Star drop resistance certification.

So yes, during my daily usage, not only it looks beautiful, but it’s also very hardy indeed. And speaking of hardy, I even did a drop test for this Kunlun Glass when I was using the Mate50 Pro as well, so do check out that video in case you haven’t done so: https://youtu.be/WJo1odBBSIs

Battery

But the phone is only useful if the battery performs really well, especially on the amount of screen-on time that you get daily. And here’s where the HUAWEI P60 Pro does not disappoint because the 4,815 mAh of battery is already a great upgrade from the P50 Pro.

But not only that, it has HUAWEI’s 88W Supercharge, where the charger does come inside of the box, that boosts the battery to 50% in just 10 minutes

And based on me use of the phone daily, I got an average battery life of close to 5 hours + with heavy use at 10% battery with dark mode turned on, which does shows that HUAWEI smartphones are still one of the top when it comes to amazing battery usage, especially for a flagship smartphone.

AppGallery

Now, I know what you might be thinking: No Google apps right? Wait, because as mentioned in my HUAWEI Mate50 Pro video, it is so easy to get all the Google apps through the Lighthouse app on the HUAWEI AppGallery, and as mentioned in that video that Android Auto does not work at that point in time, well the good news is that now it works!

And for the benefit of those of you who did not see that video on how to get Google Apps just simply appear effortlessly, let me show you how – as you just need to open the HUAWEI AppGallery, then look for the Google apps that you would like to install. Next, there will be a pop-up notification to remind you to install the Lighthouse app, click install, and voila, it’s all there!

Conclusion

So, the conclusion is this – after using the phone for an entire month daily, this is surely a very solid offering from HUAWEI.

Great camera, checked! Great battery, checked! Heck, the Rococo Pearl design itself is a hell of a reason to get the phone!

And if you’re interested, it is available in Malaysia officially and globally as well with a price of RM4,699 for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant, or RM5,499 for the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage.
